August 11th, 2009. Cortland, NY

After a disappointing loss at UFC 101, Tamdan McCrory was released today by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). A representative for McCrory was notified by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva late last night. McCrory, who dropped a split decision loss to John Howard this past weekend, was 3-3 in the UFC, with an overall record of 11-3.

McCrory’s only losses have come inside the octagon after a stellar rise from the local Northeast scene, where he put together a 8 fight win-streak before getting the call to the big show. “The Barncat” defeated UFC veteran Pete Spratt via triangle choke.

Leading up to his most recent fight, McCrory had expressed concerns over continuing to cut to 170 lbs., the welterweight limit. Visibily drained at the UFC 101 weigh-in, the effects of the weight cut seemed to carry into the fight as the performance was lacking for the usually exciting McCrory.

With his layoff from the UFC, McCrory will look to gain experience and build size to perhaps fill his 6’4” frame into the middleweight division. At only 22 years of age, an eventual return to the UFC is more than likely.

That sucks.  Tamdan is awesome.  Gives it everything he's got.  11-3 is a lot better than some of the fighters in the UFC.  Boooooooooooooo!!

If he moves up to 185, he could get a call back if he strings a few wins together.

That's too bad, he seemed like a good young talent.

Cheers

I look forward to seeing the Barn Cat run up a string of big wins against the best in the Northeast, or anywhere, and be back in the UFC before too long. He is 22? with five or six UFC bouts already. This is just a bump in the road.

Wow, that sucks. I guess that is what happens when you have a go at your boss on a ppv and lose your next fight. He will come back better tho, strikeforce would be a great move for him.

I'm relatively surprised to see this news. Howard is a very scrappy and promising young welterweight who has been impressive in both of his UFC fights. Losing to him is nothing to be ashamed of.

Hopefully McCrory can grow into his 6'4" frame and make the transition to middleweight. He's still very young and this should potentially help him to develop into a better fighter in the long run.

Don't cry for McCrory. Sure, UFC employs fighters who are less talented and have less experience, but this is a plus for him. Despite the negative attitude some fan(boy)s have about non-UFC promotions, the free agent market in MMA has never been so competitive. McCrory was making in the $15,000-$25,000 range with the UFC, he can command a higher purse with Strikeforce or DREAM and the sponsorship opportunities will still be there (and he won't be buried on the prelims)

If McCrory is moving up to 185, it's good for him to get some tune up fights in smaller promotions before getting in the octagon with the big boys.
