November 2008 he entered his second Vermont Open weighing in at 182 lbs where he took third place in his gi division and second place in his nogi division. In April 2009 he entered his third Vermont Open where he weighed in at 174 lbs and won the blue belt beginner division then went on to win the absolute middleweight division before being defeated by the lightweight absolute division champion.
Derrick trained traditional gi Jiu Jitsu with BJJ Revolution Team in Montpelier, VT from March to June 2009. He started training mixed martial arts in January 2008 with Lyndon State Jiu Jitsu but started serious MMA training with Burlington Brawl Welterweight champion Aaron Fondry where he helped prepare Aaron For his for his Welterweight title defense at Burlington Brawl 5 against Allen Harrell (that he won).
In August 2009 Derrick moved from Lyndonville, VT to Morgantown, KY. He started training MMA with Bill Mayfield's Hidden Samurai Martial Arts in Owensboro, KY and found a new training partner, former WFC Bantamweight champion Bobby Swackhammer in Bowling Green, KY.
In November 2009 Derrick has his first mixed martial arts fight at 158 lbs (nearly half the size he was a little over two years prior) for Hardrock MMA in Elizabethtown, KY where he was choked out via triangle by Brandon Harrington.
Derrick is currently taking 1-2 years off from competitive MMA to become a better pure athlete and drop to either the 145 or 135 lbs weight divisions, but still competes in grappling competitions.

Saturday Feb. 20th Tim Carpenter defeated Michael Lima (0-1 Team Hayes Extreme) via a rear naked choke in the 1st round. This was Swackhammer Jiu Jitsu's first team win.
