Andrew McVey started training in Mixed Martial Arts during his Junior year at Morrisonville High School. He was one of the first members to train under William "Bill" Elmore, founder of Blind Dog MMA. Blind Dog MMA is based in Central Illinois and features training sessions many times a week in Springfield, and Carlinville.
"The Elmore's have been like a second family to me," said McVey. "Three years ago, on a weekend, I was staying over with Jake, playing video games, watching sports, you know; teenage boy things."
"Then Bill came home one night, told us he was going to start his own team, and started teaching us some moves, we've been at it ever since. Now three years later, Bill is a great instructor on any angle of the sport, and Jake is an outstanding fitness trainer and friend. These guys can take a 135 pound bookworm and make him ready to take on a pro fighter in a year."
Andrew has trained for three years with Elmore and his son Jake, who is also an esteemed fighter. In Early November of 2009, he accepted his first contract to fight in "Don't Tread On Me II" an event run by Team Warrior Concepts of Springfield.
McVey would go on to lose his first match against Pontiac MMA's Bryan Hildensperger by Referee Stoppage from Strikes in the first round.
On Saturday, April 3rd, 2010, at "Don't Tread on Me III" another succesful Team Warrior Concepts event, Andrew would walk away with his first MMA victory via Guillotine Choke just over a minute in the first round against Josh Charron of Pontiac MMA.
When asked about the fight, McVey laughed and commented:
"You know, the thing that I thought was great is that there are two guys, who just love the sport. We weren't fierce people, not angry natured. Just a couple guys doing what we love most."
"I'm very happy that I got my first win, but I still have yet to have a true test of my boxing skills."
Here and Now.
Andrew McVey made the decision to pursue an education during the summer of 2010 and hasn't been in action since. HE continues to instruct and train with friends in Morrisonville, Pawnee, and Carlinville, Illinois.
I asked McVey if he would return to the cage sometime:
"Absolutely. You know, I won my first fight, and I made some decisions, and I knew that they would effect how hard I could train, and me and my trainers decided that I wouldn't be able to train as much as I needed while balancing college and a job. I am still training and sparring, but I do more teaching of fundamentals than anything right now. Someday though."
Andrew's fight school, known as Bling Dog MMA has since disbanded and has been out of action since fall of last year. He currently works with several independent fighters in the central Illinois area.
