I was at the judo world championships in Rio today and got introduced to Ezequiel Paraguassu, better known as the guy who gave his name to the sleeve choke.

He's only 49, I thought he'd be much older. He trains judo athletes at an Olympic center in the state of Espírito Santo.

When did this choke start getting referred to as Ezekial? Royce was attempting this a lot 20 yrs ago at UFC 1 which would have made this guy only 29 at the time. If they were calling it Ezekial then he must have been choking people left and tight with it. In Judo it's referred to as sode guruma jime. Phone Post

Early/Mid 80s I think. Although I'll be honest I'm not sure.

Interestingly, he would actually use the choke from INSIDE people's guard as he had difficulty passing the guards of the jiu-jitsu guys he trained with when he was here in Rio.

btw, an interesting fact is that Ezeqial he got submitted at the 1988 olympic games by a Korean with kata gatame.

Pretty awesome quiencidence that this Ezekial guy is so good at the Ezekial Choke. Although if there was a Brandon choke I would try to get really good at it. Phone Post
