Nightmare type of guy to go against IMO. Just so low to the ground and tough to sweep. How do you deal with a guy like this? Apparently its a riddle that stumped Leandro as well. Not to mention Orlando is just very very good.

I guarantee you that guy on the bottom that whole time is gonna have an injury or some major pain from that match.

Did he pass the guard at all or score any points in either of those matches? Or was this an ADCC repeat? Very good base? For sure yes, but I have not seen very good bjj technique, just smothering and weight based pressure. Anyone have any links to any that may demonstrate it? He did look exceptionally fast against Lo when defending his legs being grabbed and when he sprung up to drive him out of bounds though.

But in regards to your question about base, instead of trying to sweep, blue had the right idea. Dive to deep half, kills a lot of weight and pressure. He attacked the back but got sloppy and went straight for the arm without securing hooks and points first. Maybe Marcelos butterfly hook sweep, where he kicks the leg base? I struggle to offbalance really big guys.

Arm drags... I just think some guys aren't meant to be swept. You gotta go around em

one of my training partners is 5'4 260lbs (he's probably 245 now, but was a bit heavier when we first met). He was a former powerlifter, has no arms, no neck and is unbelievably strong and has an incredible base. the things that worked for me against him were armdrags from guard and the basic butterfly hook sweep (i do the variation where i whizzer his arm (on the side i hook with) and kimura grip his far arm). Other than that being on your back with him is rough.

That said - a guy with those proportions make you A LOT better. Getting armbars or chokes are really difficult due to limb length so you really have to be locked in. training with him has made me a lot better

Look at his forearms and hands. I just noticed on IG the other day that they are freakishly large.

He's athletic as shit. I used be a personal trainer at Golds Gym Pasadena where he was one too. This was right before and during his jump into martial arts. At the time he was a not so trim (but always strong) 3 bills. We played dodgeball on Fridays and he would always be one of the first guys to get a ball at the beginning of a game. He had to wear cut off sweats at Sityodtong because the Thai trunks wouldn't fit. He would lift me off the ground doing knees when I padded him up. He was like a fish to water with martial arts, never seen anything like it. Worked his ass off.

Pulling deep half guard on guys with this build will not work unless you are of comparable weight imho

Deep half is perfect again big guys, it literally takes their weight away.

didn't this dude get accused of something shady not too long ago? (Not trying to talk shit, He seems cool)

Unless you have an amazing deep half setup you have a great chance of getting crushed.

Good luck getting under a guy like that and keeping his weight off of you when you're the smaller guy. In my opinion, it is a guard best used against someone roughly your weight. There's a reason the best deep half guys are big. Faria is super heavyweight. The second best deep half guy, Trans, is an ultra heavyweight. The third best guy, MacKenzie, is the lightest (Middleweight) but he rarely fights in the absolute. The only small guy who used deep half successfully against larger guys was Jeff Glover, usually in no gi, during the infancy of BJJ in the US against clearly outmatched non-professional grapplers. Marcelo Garcia used to use it a lot in his earlier days but left it in favor of butterfly and X when he was a brown belt because it didn't work well against larger guys.

The best half guard player against larger guys is Leite. But he plays a shallow half guard rather than deep.

I suppose its how you are raised. Concepts are the same MG attempts to get under you, where people like the Miyaos/MB attempt to use distance and keep bigger people as far away as possible.

ogjune is correct.

deep half works against bigger guys only if they just aren't as good as you.

Isn't that video from 2013?   How would Orlando do against the improved and super-sized Leandro of today?
