...Reddit comment in history.

We’re four days away from the first Star Wars video game story since Star Wars Kinect, but few people are talking about what Star Wars Battlefront II’s campaign might look like. Instead, the internet discourse has been all about microtransactions, and players feel so ripped off that they’ve granted publisher EA the award for most downvoted Reddit comment of all time.

At -341,000 points (and growing) in less than 24 hours, this post from Reddit user EACommunityTeam defending Battlefront II’s locking of characters like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker is by far the most unpopular comment in Reddit’s history. The previous leader, as compiled on this wiki page, was just -24,333. (Points are determined by starting at 0, adding the number of upvotes including the original poster’s, and subtracting the number of downvotes.)

I got the first game for free with my Ps4 and it was cool for about 5 minutes to fight with relatives as jedis and shit.

No single player.

Multiplayer you need to unlock a bunch of shit to be competitive, so like you are new to the game, and you suck because you are new, but you also suck because all the more experienced players have better weapons and skills.

The overwatch system where the pay or play to unlock stuff is all cosmetic is way better.

I was told years ago that the direction the industry was going was 'mobile gaming' and 'microtransactions'.  I knew then that the people who came up with good 'schemes' to 'incentivize' microtransactions would get promoted, and those who were against the idea would be facing a very much uphill battle.

I went into a different field entirely at that point (about a decade ago).

Mobile gaming/micro transactions/requiring connection to internet to play single player campaign is the death song of the industry. As a gamer since the Atari 2600 this makes me angry and sad.

I have a feeling this game will disappoint me. Hope I’m wrong though.

First one was way overpriced for the lack of content I'm staying far away from this one.

Instead of making a good game, EA just rigs their games.  Like Madden/FIFA, the AI will just run faster than his max speed, to tackle you (if you outsmarted the AI).   And when the AI wants to score, your tackle will fail, and the next closest guy will act like an idiot, and then when you take control of him, oops, too late!

The trend toward micro transactions has all but killed my interest in most video games.

Good reason to avoid games with microtransactions, especially the p2w type. The second reply to EA nailed it:

"This is the future of sequels. See who was popular then lock it."

Me too but if done right it's not too terrible.

Overwatch is pretty good as you get a box every 5 games or so plus there are 3 per week that are easy to get. You can also use credits to get exactly what you want rather than waiting for a box.

I agree. Although, Bethesda has a good system that I've spent more cash on than probably any other publisher (fallout 4 and Skyrim: remastered). Theres mods for free, certified and bug tested paid mods, and robust DLC offerings. It seems that there are ways to re-monetize a title after it's published, but it's crucial that the content value is consistent with the price. The whole micro-transaction thing seems predatory. It plays to a common flaw in human logic where, when a price hits a minute level, one tends to misunderstand the gap between price and value. It doesn't seem like much, but over time and frequency the difference is like buying a $20 game for $40 bucks, which no one would ever do. It seems shitty, but I think the market is realizing that long term success is aquired from consistent quality offerings after a titles launch. GTA, another Goliath, has sold well even on the next gen systems, but only because the game evolves, and is still competitive as an IP.

The first game was garbage, I was mind of liking the beta for this one, but I'll probably never get it.

The big problem is how long it will take the average gamer to unlock the heroes and villains like Yoda and Vader..a few guys have figured out it will take about 40 hours of gameplay to unlock a single hero or villain! The game does not give you points for kills or winning but just the length of time you have spent playing...

Granted you could always pay real money to get them quicker which most people will do because most people don't have the time to grind for hours on end

GAAS - Games As A Service

How you charge people for a product that costs $120 to make without making them think it costs $120 to make. It's where we're all headed now. This nonsense made a shit-ton of cash for the bean counters, same with the Free to Play idea.

It's here to stay.

I bought my Xbox One with the Battlefront package and was bored after 20 minutes. I had to spend more money for bullshit that wasn't even released yet?!

EA is really giving it to the mobile gamers too.  Star Wars Game of Heroes is free to play, but really pay to win.  It's well over $100 to unlock / max a single high level character. If you want to be competitive at the top of the game, you need at least 5 of those characters.

$500 in add ons for a game you play on the crapper - consoles are going to be even worse.

Ugh sports games are still like this?! Rubber band AI I can't stand..either racing or football games it doesn't matter how good you are, the AI will catch up and make it competitive..fuck that, if I am playing well enough to beat the AI by 30 points so be it..

Microtransactions are here to stay.

The developers have figured in long time gamers being mad and not playing some titles. The same way a store figures in shoplifting or a Payday loan place figures in defaults.

What the developers really want to do is normalize microtransactions to younger gamers so in a few years MT's will just be a part of how games are played.

Take Two has stated MT's will be part of all their titles moving forward.

So the next Red Dead, bro's.
