Aldo rejecting Pettis makes his title that much more prestigious. Guys like GSP and Jones take easy title defenses against fighters coming off losses instead of actual #1 contenders of their divisions. You should have to earn the title shot not be handed it. Anyone else agree with Aldo? Its good to hear some justice after so many bad title shots recently and all the deserving fighters like Hendricks, Weidman, and Lamas getting screwed over. Love Pettis but he doesn't deserve a FW title shot.

Lamas has earned his shot. If Pettis wants a title fight it should be at 155, you know, the division he's actually fought in... Phone Post

Just like Edgar, Chael, and probably Cormier? Anyone upset with Pettis getting a shot at FW has to be upset about any fighter getting a title shot outside of "their" division. Phone Post

People were pretty upset about those. It's about keeping the sport from turning into random title fights without going on a title run to get it. It makes no sense to pull the top contender from one division that doesn't have another one, and move him into a title fight in a division that has a top contender already Phone Post

Because they make more money with a Rousey 10 fight win streak than a Rousey loss to Cyborg Phone Post

I hate it when a guy jumps up or down weight classes and automatically gets a title shot. Even if you're a champ i think you should always need 1 fight before fighting for the title. Lamas vs Pettis would be perfect. Good for Aldo for rejecting it even though he should have done the same for Frankie

I don't think people are upset over Pettis getting a chance at the shot, it's more that the champion should have his say in the matter. Pettis isn't #1 contender in this weight class.

I'm pissed that Chael is getting the shot. In regards to Edgar, people have been saying he should move down for years, he's a former defending champ at lightweight and I believe he won the second fight with Bendo. That was a "super fight" and it got put together once Koch got injured iirc. The first mention of Pettis moving down and challenging Aldo came out of no where. Had people been saying Pettis should move down and fight guys his own size, you'd be right. As of right now he is the #1 contender at lightweight, should he not fight for that title first? Phone Post

Also, Lamas has beat 3 top 10 guys in a row and is pretty much being told to sit the fuck down so the UFC can sell more PPV's with the Pettis fight. The UFC is sports entertainment not a sport. Phone Post

When you already have a clear cut #1 contender in a weight class (Lamas) and he gets skipped so the UFC can make some extra $, it kind of devalues the title IMO. It becomes more about what sells, not what is right and who earns the shot. If the Leafs got given a spot in the Stanley Cup final every year, the NHL would make a fuck load of money, unfortunately real sports don't work like that... Phone Post

Pettis vs Aldo is an awesome fight. There's a very good chance that Pettis beats him as well.

Exactly. It's unnecessary and it screws up 2 divisions. There's just no need for it. Aldo seems to care about the legitimacy of his division and belt. The belt shouldn't just be a promotional tool.

I respect Aldo for standing up to this, basically doing what everyone his division is saying. I hope a lot of the other mma fighters get vocal in their support, especially the other featherweights. Phone Post

Agree with OP,
Pettis should fight for the LW Strap he earned the next Title Shot in his own Division why isn't Pettis getting any criticism for wanting to fight the smaller man at FW rather than the Bendo/Melendez winner at LW?

The wait for either fight is about the same just doesn't make since and if it happens Lamas is screwed over who presently the number one contender at FW

When Cormier beats Mir and is gifted a title shot at LHW, you guys here should get really hot about it. Maybe Jones will refuse, how great would that be?! Phone Post

I won't keep quoteboxing; I don't necessarily disagree with you, but Aldo needs to realize that he's in a ppv driven industry and the more eyes on the product the better. More people would pay $60 for Aldo/Pettis than Aldo/Lamas. There's no honorable way for a champion to refuse challenger and this isn't a short notice thing.

Personally, I feel like Pettis should stay at LW but him and Aldo sounds like a damn good scrap and I really want to see it. Phone Post
