Georges St-Pierre All But Closes the Door on Anderson Silva Superfight

Posted on by Jeff Cain

Georges St-PierreThe idea of UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre moving up a division to face middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva in a superfight has been kicked around for years.  It’s a promotional dream, but St-Pierre on Tuesday all but closed the door on the possibility of fighting Silva… at least in the near term.

“If he wants to make 170, I weigh 170, and he can (come down to) 170, that’s fine,” said St-Pierre.

1st I'd heard of him having no interest in moving up, NONE.

don't blame him though, sounds like he'd like to get smaller rather than bigger, could be some big fights at LW for him...

I could be wrong but I didn't really get that from him while listening to the podcast. That quote for GSP was in response to Rogan asking him what if Anderson comes down to 170.  He said if he wants to make 170 he can.  To me I got the same non commited answer he always gives.  Of course I could have missed something.

If Silva loses to Weidman I can see it happening...but that's the only scenario.

GSP, isn't a big WW like so many people have been trying to say over the years.

I do think I remember hearing this as well, he hasn't fought below 170 for years, but I don't think he's got a huge cut to 185, would be crazy to see him at -170lbs again.

I do think the 230lb # GSP is talking about is high, have a hard time believing Anderson get's that big..

190 in the cage at fight time isn't a big WW?

It gets harder to retain mass as you get older without "help." I can see why he may want to go smaller. Phone Post

Same old story.

It was his goal according to his own words, once he surpassed Hughes records at ww, to move up and go for Anderson.

He doesn't want this fight. Phone Post

“I need to do stuff in my division before I take (a superfight) because it has moved now,” said St-Pierre.

I think catch weight Superfight can still happen, but GSP wants it in his time frame, not Anderson's. Now if Anderson is eager, he can certainly move down to 170.

ManWithTheIronFists - He should just admit he won't do it instead always exaggerating Anderson's weight. He also doesn't make sense when he says that 155 is closer to his natural weight of 190.

surprisingly enough, there are many LWs that cut from 185, Cody cutting to 145 from 185...

Anderson cuts from around 225 according to his manager, who states that Anderson (at 225 pounds) is too big for GSP:

Maybe GSP could move up and try to test himself against a fighter not named Anderson Silva, just for the challenge. It's not unheard of.

This again...

Pretty much EVERYONE would rather see Jones v Anderson. Also GSP still has plenty of people to face at 170.

Not bigger than the average, that's for sure.

Way to take one thing he off-handedly said 5 years ago and use that to criticize him at every turn if he doesn't adhere to it 100%. You said yourself that you don't wanna see the fight, so why do you make this exact same post in every GSP/Silva thread?

Also, please find me this quote that you refer to so often. I want to see it for myself.

Yep and i can't wait to see that fight, on the other hand Jones V Sonnen...As much as i love Chael, it is going to be the most one sided fight ever. Jones and Anderson have both cleaned out their divisions (well Anderson is about to) and Anderson has PROVEN how good he is at 205 (something GSP has not at 185). Silva V Jones is the REAL super fight and every fan knows it. The shame is, i am 99% certain we will never see it.

I respect GSP's decision and I'm a fan, but I wish he just came right out and said he wouldn't fight Silva from the beginning.

He's been dancing around the question for years and it's been obvious to everyone that he simply doesn't want this fight, not now, not ever.

So Georges, just say 'no' and put this to rest for good?
