Jackson's MMA critical over long round at WSoF 2

Saturday at WSoF 2, during Andrei Arlovski vs. Anthony Johnson, the first round appeared to last 8-9 seconds longer than the mandated five minutes. Mixed martial arts is a game that is won from a strike or submission being a fraction of an inch into the right place, and as well seconds matter. In this case, Arlovksi received a damaging blow after the five minute mark, and ended up losing a three round decision.

Arlovski's team, Jackson's MMA, posted a complaint, via Facebook.

The NJ athletic commission was worried about the World Series of Fighting getting a new canvas and new corner pads for the cage they almost canceled the fight Saturday night. Unfortunately they forgot to get a time keeper that was trained properly. 1st round 5min 8 sec in the Andrei fight. A devastating blow was landed after the 5min mark. It's amazing how so much time is spent with over regulating but the simple things can cost dearly.

Completely justified complaint here. Those 8 seconds changed the fight entirely.

I agree with this 100%. That knock down changed the scores drastically, and if it happened after the round was suppose to end it's bullshit
This.

There is no excuse for something like that to happen. Phone Post

Ugh, another reason why I have a hard time enjoying the minor leagues. Everything feels so... tacky.

How does 8 extra seconds prevent Andrei from defending himself? You fight til the bell rings. Shit happens. It shouldn't happen, but it does

Not the point!

They are two Worldclass fighters going at it, and Johnson got in a shot that broke his jaw...8 SECONDS after he should have. Arlovski was still fighting, but Johnson got in a shot.
They both should have been sitting on their chairs when that punch was thrown.

Don't be ridiculous.

My bad. I read through it faster than I should have and misunderstood what was being said. Doesn't change the fact that shit happens. It's like Falcao/Harris. They didn't count that tap, because the time-keeper went on longer than 5 minutes. I'm sure the time keeper was doing the best he could  with "One-Mississippi-Two" but fumbled it a few times, thinking no one would notice

Andre did defend himself once knocked down. You are by passing the exit to the point.

Had the bell rang when it should have, the ref would have stopped the round and andre would never have taken the hit and been knocked down. The judges would have scored the round very differently, and in a fight that went to judges score cards that 8 seconds meant a world of difference imo
Not to mention the damaged it caused to Andrei, what with having his jaw broken and all. Those 8 seconds may have permanent and devastating repercussions for that man in there future. Phone Post

Deuce77 - Would've been the same outcome.

No way to know that... Arlovski was obviously very hurt after the damage that he took after the first round should have ended, and that obviously impacted how the rest of the fight played out.

Regardless of your opinions, the rules are 5 minute rounds. This is a pretty bad mistake by the ref/timekeeper.

And not only did he lose the fight, AA also suffered a broken jaw and lost some teeth as a result of this mistake. I've been wired up myself and it really sucks so I'm sure he's extremely pissed that he's taking meals through a straw for 6 weeks because someone can't count properly.

I think they should rule it a NC and an immediate rematch should be in the works. Phone Post 3.0

Beginning of Round 2 with broken jaw < beginning or Round 2 without broken jaw.

I doubt Jackson's would be complaining if it had been Andrei blasting away at Rumble for those 8 seconds.

Yes, the timekeeper messed up but it in no way put Andrei at an unfair disadvantage. There was no punch after the whistle, no strikes to the back of the head, nothing sketchy. Mistakes happen in sports and MMA is no exception.

Johnson won fair and square and the decision should stand (and I am not even a Rumble fan).

Some shady shit going on with that athletic commission. You think it's just a coincide that the bell should have sounded just as the home town boy (American) was launching an offensive attack and the time keeper just happened to forget his one job?
Clearly they knew Johnson was going to gas in the later rounds so they gave him an extra long first round.

I'm done with this sport forever!

Just kidding - shitty situation but there is no reason to suspect foul play. I imagine it'll get ruled a NC.

How can Johnson have won fair and square if there was a mistake that put AA at a disadvantage?
