am i the only one that finds this statement dumb as fuck?

He chooses to cut the weight. Nobody forces him. He doesnt use a nutritionist and does it himself even though hes provem hes not great at it. He chooses to keep all that muscle mass. Etc.

How is any of this the UFCs fault.

He is in the same situation as Hendricks and Gastelum. He's too small for 185, but too big for 170.

UFC "could" make a 165 and 175 division to please those guys, but i do agree with you they don't HAVE to do it.

But i do think Lee is indeed a bit forced to stay at 170 right now, going to 185 isn't a great idea imo.

Kevin Lee fights at 155.

I think 10lb increments makes perfect sense. Lots of signed fighters, lots of different body types.

I am all for a 165 division but I think Kevin Lee does well at 170. Look at RDA. He's fighting for the belt (sorta) right now. I think Lee does well against the Elite of the division except for maybe Woodley and Wonder Boy.

That's the problem tho. A guy like Lee who is champion material at 155 will probably only be at best a top 5 in 170. RDA will probably hit a wall once he face guys like GSP, Woodley, Wonderboy.

I would love to see 170 replaced with 165 and 175.  Adding 195 would be cool too.  I'm okay with more weight classes but think they need to slow down with interim titles.

The thing about all those guys you listed (minus Thompson) is they are all getting on the older side. Lee is still young in this game and is improving. Not saying Lee will be champ at 170 but he has looked phenomenal in his last 3 fights (even the loss to Tony with staph). I want to see what he looks like at 170 without having to cut all that weight.

Even if there wasnt a size difference between him and gsp and woodley i dont think he would beat them. Its a skill thing not size.

Hed be in the same boat he is at LW right now. Hes top 5 but may not be able to beat the elite. So why put your body through the cut for 155 when he could probably be in the same position at 170.

RDA is probably the same size as Lee and is one fight away from the title shot.

At the end of the day there can be only 1 champ though. If you make it to the top 5 you can be championship material but it isn't guaranteed you will win. Your example uses Wonderboy who is a perennial contender but hasn't won the belt yet.

You can add more weight divisions and fighters will still cut the extreme. You will have some guys who can will become "too small" for 175 so they will cut to 165 and the issues will continue. The root problem is that fighters will continue to try and game the system for an advantage anyway possible. They should either the hydration tests, certify weights like wrestling, or institute a policy where you can only be so much over the weight. For example, if you fight at 155/LW you cannot weigh more than 171lb on the night of the fight which is the limit for WW.

I know fighters who weigh in at 155 but come into the fight at 185lbs which is 2 weight classes above what they weighed at.

This is what I see happening if they make a 165 division. Fighters who fight at 170 will cut more to get down to this division and very few 155 will move up.

It's just 5 more pounds.

Fighters need to diet better or if their bodies wont allow them to get down to that weight, fight at a more natural weight. If this guy needs to fight at 170, let him bulk up a bit and fight.

I agree with you. The issue is that most fighters if you look at interviews and comments just aren't willing to accept any responsibility for anything whether it be their weight cut, training, performance, etc. They want to have a built in excuse for everything and lay the blame  on their nutrionists, coaches, promotion etc.

If Kevin Lee dies trying to make 155, that's his fault, and nobody elses. Fight at fucking 170 then.

Gain weight or lose it, both are possible.

This. I hate when dudes cut a ton of weight and then act like they have to. Pre-emotive excuse for any losses he gets too. Can’t blame a weight cut if you’re dead, though.

I really wish more fighters had this mentality. I know a guy who is an amateur fighter and when I asked why he cuts from 155 to 135 instead of fighting as a featherweight, he said simply “then I’ll be fighting guys that are cutting from 170-180”.

Ridiculous that fighters cut that much weight to either feel advantaged or just to feel like it puts them on a level playing field.

If you would fight at 165 why can't you just fight at 170. It's 5 pounds. Ridiculous.
