UnderGround Forums Most Total Skill ever Displayed in an MMA fight?

If I recall, I made a similar thread a couple years ago. I think it needs to be updated. What fights saw the most combined skill displayed in MMA history? Ones in which both fighters show all-time great skills. (Note: I don't include Nog v. Fedor or Silva v. Henderson for specific reasons. Those are some of the GOATs fighting each other. But what was DISPLAYED in those fights from Hendo and Nog in those fights weren't enough. Generally, I think the fight has to be tightly contested to go on this list.)

Some that come to mind.

-TJ v. Cruz
-TJ v. Cody for how long it lasted
-Machida v. Shogun
-Fedor v. Cro Cop
-Frankie v. Aldo I
-Mendes v. Aldo 2
-Frank v. Tito for its time
-Randy v. Chuck II for its time
-Paulson v. Hume for its time

In my mind, the most total skill ever displayed in a fight is Jones v. DC 2.

What am I missing?

Agreed.

Mighty Mouse v. Cejudo, for as long as it lasted, was pretty damn good.

It's tough because since settling into his reign, he has been so dominant. But Dodson brought a lot to the table.

Agree with TJ vs Cody, I'm not sure I remember TJ vs Cruz well enough. Cody vs Cruz was also great.

Lawler vs Hendricks #1 is very under-rated I think.

They were both excellent that night.

I think Lawler v. Rory is even better, though.

Great one!

Even by today's standards, that is one of the most skillful fights ever.

GSP v Serra 2 was a versatile, dominant performance. Pretty sure Serra’s corner said ‘I don’t what he’s going to do next, he may take you down’

Definitely an all-time performance by one side.

But not, IMO, highest TOTAL skill from both guys. Again, just IMO.

OK, if I had been asked to make a list, it would have looked almost exactly like yours. I would add Jones vs Gus, and Machida vs Mousasi. Tempted to add Holm vs Rousey just for Holmes utter doctoral performance, but you're probably looking for competitive matches.

I remember these being considered pretty high level at the time they occurred.

Uno vs Sato
Penn vs Pulver I
Penn vs Uno II
Sakuraba vs Renzo
Big Nog vs Herring I
Big Nog vs Barnett I
F. Shamrock vs Enson Inoue
Nick Diaz vs Karo Parisyan

The ones I posted were just for their time, of course they can't be compared to Aldo Edgar I or TJ Cruz.

Still though, Big Nog vs Barnett remains probably the best display of grappling in HW history.

Anderson Silva vs Sakurai was no joke for that era either.

Good ones. A poster above mentioned Nog Cro Cop and I agree.

Also, Penn Hughes II.

Jones vs Gus and Cody vs Dillashaw came to mind.

Just to throw a random one out there as a dark horse, Gadelha vs JJ 2 in its own way had a lot of skill on display
