James "Bloodsport" Johnson of the Miami Heat. I became a fan when he was with the Raptors. Good versatile and hard nosed player.

He got into a scuffle on court recently, and people keep mentioning his MMA and kickboxing record.

I feel like this guy would be the best crossover sport candidate for MMA...

6'9" and a lean 245lbs.. World class athlete with great hand eye. Black belt 2 dan (in something?), mma experience.. And to top it off, he's half samoan. Fighter genes.

From his wiki:

Johnson holds a second-degree black belt and fought in his first mixed martial arts bout at age 18. He has an undefeated record in seven MMA matches, while also holding a 20–0 record in kickboxing matches.[27]

From article:

"James's father, Willie, the patriarch of Wyoming's unofficial first family of fighting. A sixth-degree black belt, Willie runs J&P's Martial Arts school in Cheyenne and is married to Vi, also a black belt. They have eight children who are black belts (as well as a ninth who is a blue belt, but she's only 10). James, the fifth child, was then 18 and had never fought in an MMA bout, but he had won seven world karate titles and nine national ones, and he was 20--0 as a kickboxer. He'd also been trained by his father to be fearless, so he volunteered to fight in the 205-pound weight class against Damond Clark, a 31-year-old from Casper who has since turned pro.

James was called Little Ali because of his footwork, but nicknames are standard in the family. Willie won five world and 10 national karate titles as Tuqik (pronounced TOO-quick). His mother Vi, a Samoan immigrant who began street fighting as a teenage gang leader of the Krook City Bloods in Oceanside—'I would go after the bullies,' she says, 'and beat up more men than women'—won five nationals as Vicious. Joseph (a.k.a. Baby Boy), 32; Jearamie (Hot Nickels), 28; Jessica (Bam-Bam), 26; Pal'e (the Legend); Scott (Nudo), 20; Mino (the Professor), 18; Nikko (Tuqik II), 15; and 10-year-old Kiandra have all also won national titles or been runners-up."

I cant seem to find any footage or record of his fights. Probably ammy fights eh... Anyone seen him fight? I'm sure wyoming UGers know his dad...

BLAF get in his ear! This guy could be big draw at heavyweight.

"Willie won five world and 10 national karate titles"

Willie is the father, so im guessing James is black belt in karate as well.

I don't even know how you would begin to fight a 6'9" world class athlete WITH MMA and fight experience. It would just be impossible for 99% of the planet.

6 months sprawl training and the train would be firmly back on the tracks!

The best athletes in the world are in the NBA and NFL mma has only touched the tip of the iceberg for athletic ability. Too bad it's such a white sport as we may never see the BEST atheltes in the world compete in it.

Thats what I would think... But they say he fought Damond Clark who has a 3-6 record none against James Johnson.

Could it have been ammy?

I'm not sure its a "white sport", bit if it is as you say it is, it would make sense that its only like that because all the " best athletes " are off earning more $ in other sports.

That article's like 10 years old which is why it has little detail. IIRC it's in Kenpo Karate and his father owns a gym.

I'd assume the lack of records were due to these fights being amateur ones in 2005ish. Or it might be bullshit.

Yeah I'm sure he wants to give up his 4m/year NBA salary for that 2k/fight Reebok cheque!

You dont see the best athletes in boxing anymore because the nba and nfl are 'safer' sports. This applies more to the HW division as most sports dont have weight limits. Can't blame guys for going for the most money. When wrestlers joined mma the athletic level went up. If the pay really goes up more athletes would cross over.
