Sonnen reflects on bout with Jones, what's next

Tonight Chael Sonnen made his triumphant return to UFC Tonight as an analyst and wasted no time in addressing what his future plans are:

Chael Sonnen on if he’ll keep fighting and at what weight class: “I’ll fight at 205. I’m not retiring. I’m 36 years old. I have a lot of goals and I’m not going to reach them if I retire. I don’t have a lot of options at 185. I’ve fought everyone in the top 10, including the champion a couple of times. So I moved up to 205, but I lost to the champ and it wasn’t a competitive enough match to warrant another chance. So what do I do? It was a lot better experience, not having to get the weight off. I’ll give up the size, but have a smile on my face. I could be talked into going back down if that’s where the fights are. The landscape changes quickly. I think there will be a big shakeup on July 4th weekend when Weidman gets his hands on Anderson.”

Sonnen on what it was like in the Octagon with Jones: “This was like getting into a bear cage. This guy was a monster of a man. We weighed in at the same size the day before, and I don’t know how that was possible. I put my arms around him and I thought, ‘oh my god, you’re a big guy.’ As far as the match went, I got beat up.”

Sonnen on what he thought about the early stoppage: “It’s two-fold, any time the ref helps you and stops a fight to keep you from getting hurt, you never want to come out and say anything that could disparage his judgment. At the same time, we’re in the middle of an ass-whipping contest, let us get after it. When I had my hands up because a guy is punching me, that’s called defense. But I never want to question a referee.”

Sonnen on how he would have felt winning the belt if Jones couldn’t fight with the broken toe: “Diplomatically you don’t ever want to win that way. The ones that hurt are the ones you’re supposed to win and then you blow it. But if it was given to me, I would have grabbed that belt, I would have held it up, grabbed the mic and told the crowd the golden rule is ‘he with the gold rules,’ and I would have walked out of the place and never looked back.”

Sonnen on how he envisioned the fight was going to go: “I was going to have to grind him down. I could see him he poses a lot of problems. He’s big, he’s strong and he’s got the wing span of a radioactive condor. I knew he’d take me down, but I never thought that he could take me down repeatedly. That was a surprise. And the fact that he tried so quickly, I was thrown off a little.”

Not many fighters are so open and eloquent about this kind of thing. Good on you Chael P.

It's all for show.  What's even stranger is the people who actually believe all the bs and hate him for it.

Good! He shouldn't retire. He was within seconds of beating the two most unbeatable men on earth. I would say that's a pretty could track record.

Wouldn't it be nice if fighters were this honest BEFORE fights?

Do away with phony hate.

No more Belcher-Bisping, GSP-Diaz/Koscheck, and so on.

Chael could have sold this fight BETTER and made Jon look a bigger star by talking up the fact he was David heading in there with Goliath.

People like Cinderella stories in the NCAA Men's basketball tourney so they'd have honestly bought into truth over the "beat me.....if you can" bullshit.

Honesty would go a long way.

This way when there is legit heat, it REALLY makes a fight special.

They can't all be grudge matches. Phone Post

Special is special because it doesn't happen all the time.

Fighters trying to be funny like 80s comics hoping to get waved over to Johnny Carson's couch are tiring.

Fighters starting Twitter beef is annoying.

Fighters cutting WWE promos, promising a war, delivering a sparring match and hugging afterward while saying "it was all to sell the fight" should be done away with.

This Sonnen is witty, clever, loquacious and honest.

More would have bought the fight based on the promise of effort to do the unbelievable than to believe any of the bullshit.

It has to change and it's for the better of the sport.

Not every fighter is funny, entertaining or has a great personality but so what?

Some fighters are amazing fighters but just can't really cut a promo.

I think we should enjoy everyone's differences and really savor the special ones rather than deal with an assembly line of wannabe promo mode Sonnen automatons.

I like THIS Chael.

That like equals wanting to spend my money to see him fight.

It's honest for once and refreshing. Phone Post

Everyone here enjoys Tom Lawlor's entrances and weigh in antics.

Would you like it if a ton of guys started trying that?

Wouldn't you admit that while some could pull it off that most should not and that really it should be best left as Tom's thing and enjoyed in small doses?

It becomes special when Tom dresses up at a weigh in.

This is how pre-fight trash talk ought to be.

Some guys can do it well, leave it to them but try to limit it so it remains special.

Enough with every PPV featuring a "now THESE two? Oh, they REALLY hate each other. Things heated up at the weigh in and they had to be separated."

Personalities should shine as the best fighters inevitably stand out and the talk should really only happen if there is genuine heat.

No more of this boy who cried wolf nonsense.

No one wants those tickets. Phone Post

Two words.....PURE CLASS....

I really do not care to much that some people cannot ''place'' the antics aka entertainment he pulls accordingly. The real Sonnen is the type of fighter who is a blessing for the sport of MMA. I hope he stays around,in whatever capacity, for a long long  time.

If UFC will not allow TRT anymore (which they should of never allowed) he will have no choice as well as many other fighters. Phone Post

I have to say, I've rooted against him in all of his recent fights (except bisping) but I'm finally coming around to him. He shows respect after the fight and can take losses in good humor. Personally I'd like to see that Forrest match finally happen, the banter between those two would be hillarious.

Good to hear he's not ready to retire. So what if he lost to two of the most dominant champions the ufc has ever seen? He's unproven at lhw, but easily ranks within the top ten of the me division. Plenty of entertaining fights for him out there. War sonnen motherfuckers!

I don't understand the Sonnen hate. He makes you want to watch and none of it is that serious.

There is plenty left for Chael any of the Brazilian guys Vitor or Wandy even Lyoto down the road Fox card or a main event in Brazil. He is still a draw and knows how to sell a fight and I'm sure he made a nice paycheck with Jones. Phone Post
