Was this to defend against takedowns? To defend against low kicks? A specific tactic? Or did he just not give a fuck?

To draw him(bisping) in.

Seriously?

NotImpressedByYourScreenName - He figured that it was better to get hit by a pillow than to block it and potentially get hurt by the power of his own glove. Phone Post

Seemed rather Silva-esque with the front hand down, or Roy Jones-esque.

He did it to get Bisping to commit to an attack so he could counter I would iimagine.

Not worried about Bisping's power, looking to counterstrike.

Belfort had his hands up in the first round. He didn't do the hand dropping until round 2

At the start of round 2, belfort had felt bispings power, he felt he had his timing down and his confidence was obviously soaring after their exchanges in round 1. So Belfort felt comfortable in dropping his hands to bait bisping in. Phone Post

For sure, that glove is a former LHW Champion. Not something you want to turn a blind eye to.

You can explode faster when your hands are slightly down because your shoulders are looser.
