Supposedly he was only fighting to get the belt and didnt care about money because he could make good cash off of BJJ classes.

We all know he aint getting back to the belt even if he wins a fight or two. He is more likely to get Jake Shields'd out of the UFC.

Love of competition.

One sub away from most subs in UFC history, I believe.

Good paychecks, he enjoys fighting and wants to pursue some records while he's still able. The guys he's losing to are all top 5.

Taking the fight with Usman on short notice showed some sense of responsibility towards the sport and Welterweight division. I believe Maia saw an opponent that deserved a top 5 challenge and he was the only one available considering the circumstances, he wanted to help pioneer more for the UFC, really a favor for all involved by a class act competitor. Fans should admire the old school mentality.

Guy loves to compete.

He, at 40 and on short notice, made usman look very human and beatable imo.

And hes still top 5 in the division imo

OP is your stereotypical "what have you done for me lately" fight 'fan'. Go watch Demian maul Gunnar from his streak before these 3 losses and tell me he isn't a savage.

This is how it should be, your standing is based off of your recent performances not your past glories.

I think it is more a product of UFC clamouring to throw 1 or 2 big names on these events held in South America. Most of these cards are so watered dow, they're basically hard to watch.

I was shocked though to see Maia on the card. He's well past his expiry date. He is one dimensional.

Yes but "recent" doesn't mean only yesterday

40 year old legend takes fight on short notice, and managed to make the "next unbeatable" fighter look entirely beatable.

Maia is great and is still getting better as much as that is possible at his age.

Because not all modern MMA fighters are not athletic wrestlers.

There are still strikers and BJJ players to beat.

This. People don't understand that Maia would look great against anyone that doesn't have Elite TDD. His last 3 fights have been against the 3 guys with the best TDD of the ww division, which is why he now "looks bad".

Bunch of haters.

I asked a genuine question. The guy set a goal for himself and now he is fighting with no goal in mind, other than "cuz he tuff bro do you even train" shit replies Im getting here.

I thought at least someone here knew something about it, like he wanted to complete his contract or something.

Right. He can still beat plenty of guys.

But, his wrestling looks worse. He no longer commits his hips to his shots like he used to.

I love Maia. But it's also beyond comprehension why he hasn't developed an uppercut off his level changes.

Because he's a warrior that likes to fight. Some people like to push/ test themselves. He likes a challenge and doesn't give a fuck about "safe fights".

It's not like he's getting knocked out in every fight. Outside of Woodley busting up his eye he barely took any damage in these losses.

He looked pretty busted up after the Covington fight.  Looked like he may have got a broken nose from the Usman fight.

Has to be a point when it takes its cumulitive toll.

Even Usman was surpised that Maia was landing on his face. Although it seemed like there wasn't  lot of power on most of those, he was still connecting. More than I thought he would.

All superficial damage, even broken nose is not necessarily a concussive blow.

He needs to fight unranked guys at this point, hes not getting finished but after the 1st couple rounds he gases and it makes for a boring fight
