without wrestling to get it to the ground

this is what prime Rickson would look like if he fought today's mma fighters

BJJ has been neutralized in modern MMA

Usman, a mediocre wrestler, just beat a world class BJJ practitioner and long time mixed martial artist with two broken hands

Yes and no. I feel like you really need everything. If you’re going to take each art into its purest form, BJJ still wins 70% of the time.

World class wrestling is useless if you’ve got no bjj defence once it hits the team floor.

World class striking is useless if you can’t defend a takedown.

Maia at this point is clearly way past his best and Usman is dominating everyone

What you’re saying is similar to saying that a traditional striker in the style of TKD or Karate will be neutralized in MMA. We all know the word “mixed” so it’s all about who’s the best at putting it all together. Two things:

1. It’s easier for traditional strikers to transition because fights start standing and it’s already in their realm

2. “Pure BJJ” guys like Maia have a hard time using their strikes to set up takedowns, and he is one of the least evolved fighters in terms of striking

Guys like Werdum and Ortega are pure BJJ guys but use their striking to round out their game. Then since you don’t want to be on the ground with them, you keep it standing and then they finish you with strikes. The best guys use their BJJ to keep fights standing and use their striking to get it to the ground and use their Jiu Jitsu.

I wouldn't say its useless, but it is probably one people are training least in MMA: wrestling and striking first by far, then some BJJ / grappling here and there.

Right.

Maia has the wrestling to take down MOST GUYS and the world class BJJ to finish them.

Three tough wrestlers in a row, plus his getting older, makes people forget.

Sure didn't look useless when he was in his is 30s against those terrible wrestlers like Chael Sonnen, Rick Story, and Jon Fitch.

Didn’t hear you say that when Maia beat Fitch. Or when Werdum beat everybody

Any champ level guys who are solely specialists in any single style?

No.

wrestling would win 99% of the time

I do agree that if your strength is the ground and not standing striking and the other guy knows that (as in a MMA fight), you definitely need a way (wrestling, judo etc.) to get it to the ground

Maia has always had good takedowns. It has more to do with the fact that wrestling really deminishes with age, and he's 40.

So if World Class BJJ is useless, then why didnt Woodley and Usman even attempt to take Maia down? If anyone attempted takedown attempts, it was Maia.... Why do most guys not even attempt to take Jacare down?

Not saying one is better than the other. They both are great arts to practice/train but your statement is dumb. Usman spends a lot of time doing BJJ and so does every other solid wrestler in the UFC. Otherwise, it would look again like the days of Royce submitting all these badass wrestlers.

Remember when Hughes out-BJJed Royce?

Was it because his BJJ was better? Or because years of top level wrestling, then MMA made him a better overall grappler, thus being able to better utilize the BJJ skills he had...even if they weren't up to par with Royce's?

(Not sure if that makes sense.)

Or was it neither?
