Göran Kropp:  He didn't die on Everest but biked from Sweden to Everest and then climbed it without extra oxygen.

For his famous 1996 ascent, Kropp left Jönköping on October 16, 1995, on a specially-designed bicycle with 108 kg (240 lb) of gear and food. He traveled 8,000 miles on the bicycle and arrived at Everest Base Camp in April 1996. Following a meeting of all of the Everest expeditions currently on the mountain, it was agreed that Kropp would attempt to summit first. On May 3, Kropp blazed a trail through thigh-deep snow and reached a point 300 feet from the summit. However, Kropp decided to turn around, believing that he would be too tired to descend safely if he went up further. While Kropp recovered from the ordeal at base camp, the 1996 Everest Disaster unfolded. Kropp helped bring medicine up the mountain. Three weeks later, on May 23, Kropp again tackled the mountain, this time successfully summitting (without extra oxygen support). He then cycled home.[1] He returned to Everest in 1999 with girlfriend Renata Chlumska to undertake a cleanup, during which they removed 25 discarded canisters from the mountain. They also made a successful summit attempt together.

I wonder which mtn has more dead bodies, K2 or Everest. Apparently you have a 10% chance of dying climbing K2. That's crazy.

It seems most ppl die on Everest in storms. I don't think you're going to be able to land a helicopter on Everest in hurricane force winds. Then again, I'm no helicopter pilot.

accordion to the internet: 210 deaths on everest, 66 on K2.
K2's death rate is triple that of everest.

My brother in law actually drove his Jeep about 9/10 of the way to the summit of Everest. The way he told it, he had the 8 cylinder and ran out of gas. He might have made it if he had the straight 6, but then he might not have had the torque he needed. It's all he ever talks about when we're sitting around having beers.

Couple good books I've read on Everest are

-Into Thin Air, John Krakauer
-The Climb, Anatoli Boukreev

A good book on ice/general climbing is "kill or kill" Mark twight.

"Everest,"  the IMAX movie, documentary really, is very good.  It takes place during the storm of 96, the famous "Into Thin Air" storm.

It follows a fellow climbing team, with the son of Norgay, as they attempt summit.  Good backstory, great cinematography, a cute Spanish girl, and intense scenes as the party get stuck on the mountain.

Everest, the mountain, scares the shit out of me.  Huge respect for those that make the trip.

Stronghold - Standard procedure when finding a dead body is to loot it for more ammo, energy packs, and health kits. It they have a weapon upgrade, take it.

Winner.

LOL!   He would have had a better chance of making it if he would have used that Trans Am on the lawn.  pfft.

If you like Into thin air, read Eiger Dreams, which Krakauer wrote before ITA. One of the climbers in the book describes climbing as"It's sort of like having fun, only different".

The Climb gives Boukreev side of ITA, and provides additional context. Boukreev was one of the climbing guides in ITA. Krakauer wasn't to entirely sympathetic with Boukreevs behavior. He(Boukreev)died climbing in 1997.

Mountaineering has generated some the best literature ever written. I'll need to check my home library for some other titles and authors

GaryG,

I'll check that one out thank. I've read a bunch of climbing books as well, those I listed are the more memorable ones. The others I've forgotten the name of hah.

Oh, I misspelled the title of Twights book, it's "Kiss or Kill"

Ratio of death to summit for Everest compared to K2 is :

Everest, 4000 summits 210 deaths
K2 253 summits 77 deaths , 1 in 7 summiters die on way down.

From the video above. Talks about the difficulty of climbing Everest vs K2, losing 30lbs climbing k2, pissing blood, watching a guy fall 5000 ft down a mountain and other stuff.

Watch the video I posted. It is pretty amazing. An hour long but I couldn't stop watching it.

Most of the deaths occur due to human error. Very very few are act of god stuff.

Apparently you can't digest food at super high altitudes. The guy in the video, Chris Warner, was talking about how you might take in 200 calories on summit day and then burn 20,000 calories.

A lot of people just sit down and then die.

At that sort of altitude there is no thinking about stuff, from what I've heard your operating on almost instinctual level because you are so oxygen-starved.
