slam1523 - fuck you lymond. those books aren't that bad. a little YA, but so is Dresden.

i have to admit though, you recommended west of january to me, and it's good. great story. almost made me cry at the end...almost.

LOL. Glad you liked West, it's stuck with me for years.

My problem with Hearne is that he tries too hard. Dresden has pop culture references, wise ass remarks, plenty of supernatural beings etc., but they don't pop up on nearly every page like in Iron Druid. FFS, we get it, your dog is funny, the mythological beings are assholes, you've seen every movie, and you're better than everyone else, stop beating us over the head with it. Some of that may be misremembered, but I pirated his most recent book and couldn't even get through two chapters.

^^^ I loved Iron Druid series. Sorry. It was funny, interesting power sets, and a nice mythology.

I'd go ahead and finish the Song of Ice and Fire books before getting into anything else. There's a lot of characters, plots, subplots going in SoIaF. If you step away for a while, there's a lot of "refreshing" to do or else you feel lost.

I'm just starting the First Law series, only about 30 pages in, so can't comment on that. But I liked Way of Kings as much as I liked books from SoIaF, though the books/writing styles are quite different and have different appeals. Phone Post

MushroomHead - With the second season being over, I'm suffering from Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire withdrawal.

I've read all the books and the Dunk and Egg short stories.

Anyone have any recommendations on books or series of books in the fantasy genre? I realize a Song of Ice and Fire is probably the epitome, but its one of my favorite genres.

I read the first Wheel of Time book and decided its not a series I feel like pursuing. Phone Post

Mencken -  Steven Erikson's Malazan series is pretty solid.  Extremely rich world
Everyone who talks about his books must be required to say, "extremely rich world." that's all I hear. I am a veteran fantasy reader and gave up trying to read book one. Just couldn't do it. Still have it and will try again in a bit. Phone Post

Mencken -  Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is good, but i've heard his second book is a huge drop off in terms of quality
I'm on book two and although it's fun, it's not riveting and there's been more Harry Potter kid-shenanigans at magic school than actual fantasy action or depth. I'm sticking with it but have long realized it's the farthest thing from GoT or Wheel of Time than anything.

A book I really enjoyed was The Way Of Kings by Eric Sanderson. You'll have to wait a bit before his next one because he's finishing up the Wheel of Time finale. but read his book so you'll be ready for the next. Phone Post

Have you guys read any of Lincoln Childs books? Just got into reading and have enjoyed the two books of his I have read. Has Enders Game been suggested? I read that in 10th grade and loved it. Phone Post

Did the same thing, put it down, and then a couple years later thought I would give it a shot. Took awhile but, man, when it finally clicks its great

slam1523 - Caine Black Knife/Caine's Law - Matthew Stover. a continuation of Heroe's Die. dark, philosophical, but still very accessible. it doesn't go that deep, but it tries.

I wanted to like Hero's Die, since Matt Stover is a martial artist and did a good job on the Star Wars Episode III novelization.

But I was underwhelmed and never bothered with the rest of the books in the series.

Erikson's series is hard to get into but once you do it is worth it.

Gardens of the Moon was not that good of a book.

The next book Dead house gates is good.

Memories of Ice is very good.

The second book was better than the first. I have not read the last 2 but I am going to pick them up now.

leifdawg - Half Blood Chronicles by Mercedes Lackey and Andre Norton:

Elvenbane
Elvenblood
Elvenborn
Elvenbane (I just now found out there was a 4th book and it's been so long I get to re-read all of them so yay!)

um dude, I'm wiking these suggestions and this is what it says for the half blood chronicles

" The series is released by Tor Books, and comprises Elvenbane, Elvenblood, Elvenborn, and Elvenbred. Elvenbred, the fourth book in the series, has not yet been released. Due to the death of co-author Andre Norton, it is currently unknown as to when it will be released"

So you might want to hold off on rereading them.

Anyways after reading through this thread I'm deciding between the farseer trilogy, malazan, the gentlemen bastard, and drenai. I'm leaning toward farseer right now because the premise interests me but I'm not a hundred percent sure. I'm younger and not super picky about the writing because of it but I definetly prefer high fantasy and for the most part for it to be centered around one or two people instead of a bunch. Would any of these be a good choice for me based off that?

Also, name of the wind is very good imo, there was a definite drop off between the first and the second but that was mostly caused by the author taking waaaay too long for them to walk around a forest basically. As for the sword of truth series I quit reading it because I got bored with it, nothing special about it imo.

One more thing, a series I read recently that is good if you're looking for something quick and entertaining is the strongbow saga, it's basically a fiction novel about vikings. I'm a big vikings fan in general (fuck the football team) and I tore through them in no time at all. Not especially complex or anything but as I said it's a nice light read.
