Being English/Irish/Scottish/ with an Australian passport I don't do thanksgiving but good on everyone who does....So fugazi We are in the same boat champ.

Lets be happy for eachother.,...And on another note....Bike rides will give you piles....Mary jane will give ya smiles. :)

Or maybe his parents could be thankful on, oh i dont know thanksgiving and give their son whos still alive and working on his demons a phone call.

I am sure there are parents out there who have lost a child to some form of addiction who would love to be in the OPs parents position to be able to hug there kid one last time and tell them they love them.

I get the ex wife and kids blowing him off because he destroyed their lives most likely but i cant imagine not calling my son on a holiday even if he is battling certain personal issuss! Phone Post

I am on every side of this equation in every way. I, like you, had a very rough patch around the same time you did. Mine was a little opposite since my wife and I's families abandoned us when we needed them the most (multiple surgeries, they just disappeared).

I was going through a lot of depression, isolation, and self-loathing. To that end, I had to just find one positive at that point, and hold the fuck onto it. Love it, live it, and then find more. Every positive you start finding is like a step out of the shitter. The first and easiest step is that someone always has it worse. Always.

I also just lost a dear friend to suicide this year. She was an alcoholic, and was in the middle of the "tough love" phase from her family, including her husband. She went to inpatient, and came home to an unsupportive husband, and family. My wife and I did as much as we could, but I have also had 8 major spine surgeries over the course of 3 years, so we have been preoccupied but available. In retrospect, all of the signs were there, but we were in the passenger seat. She left a daughter that just beat cancer behind, and a huge mess full of pain, regret, and anger towards her as well. Now all of the firsts are happening (daughter's b-day and the holidays). It really makes me sad to see the aftermath, and it is personally very painful.

I am sorry you are alone today, but I at least challenge you to find some positives, and start liking yourself again. Family can be fickle at times for sure, but after a while, actions speak louder than words. Our mind plays games with us, and sometimes makes us play games with others as well. Just call your kids and wish them a happy thanksgiving, and you were just thinking about them today. Keep it light and neutral. Substance abuse can make others apprehensive about this time being different than any of the other times. You just have to take things a step at a time.

I wish you well, friend, and hope the next year will bring you closer to being happy and liking yourself. You can't expect to start mending fences if you can't forgive yourself first.

I had substance abuse problems which were largely to blame for losing my family. I'm recovering now but i'm sure they don't believe that.

Plus, they are all successful people and i work a dead-end job that they don't respect.

Big ups to you for getting right. Seriously.

I admire people that are able to get on the right path after going down the wrong one. I don't know that I would be able to. Build from your sobriety / "clean" date.

I've tried getting ahold of my daughters but to no avail, so i left them texts just letting them know i love them and to remember how special they both are........not going to call parents, tho.

I know that i embarass them and they probably wish i didn't exist so they wouldn't have to explain how they managed to have a son like me.

Oh well....i will always love them.
