Are you seriously confused about this?  there would be VAST differences in our day to day lives.  Totalitarianism is a form of goverment that seeks to control all aspects of culture.  You would have to profess the state beliefs or be prosecuted!  In your totalitarian state you have banned religion.  In order to enforce this ban, you would have to have police of some kind arresting people that practiced religion.  Is there really an analog to that in our present society?

If I linked to an article from say infowars.com for example, they would say "lol @ the source", but when I show them that the source is one of their accepted sources for news, they can't pull the "lol @ the source" card.

They are useful in that they report what the public have been deemed to know. So some of what they report is correct, some is pure propaganda, and some is selectively dished out in a way that will put across a certain point of view without offering the alternative point of view. In this particular article, they mention court cases and names, these are easily verified by checking public records, so no matter what the spin angle might be, the fact remains that the murderers in these cases, all claimed to have been influenced by the Matrix movie.

I was unable to find any alternate news site to link to. It seems that this story is so mainstream, and widely accepted as correct, that none of the "conspiracy sites" even see the need to report it.

The difference in your day to day life would be that you would have a totalitarian regime regulating your day to day  cultural activities.  So if you had a day to day preference for, for example, metal music, and the day to day totalitarian regime outlawed that form of cultural expression, you could, on a day to day basis, be thrown in prison for your day to day listening habits.
