What tax bracket people fall into, and what they actually pay are usually two different things. Classifying your income in different ways can lower the amount of tax that gets paid.

People often have different definitions of "fair share" and it usually doesn't include themselves paying more, except for Warren Buffett. |

The wealthiest 2% should pay 2% of the taxes. This would be a great incentive for the middle class to work harder to become the top 2%. |

lol. also, those who can fly, shoot fire from their hands, and breathe underwater should pay no taxes. this would be a great incentive for people who can't yet do those things to work harder to become part of that select group who can. |

not saying it's true but the wealthiest 2% should pay far more than that. Only in America are they able to amass the sort of wealth that makes them 2%. They should be grateful they're not living in any other country and actually working hard to earn a living. |

Everyone needs some skin in the game IMO...it's easy to vote yourself more of someone else's money; when it's your paycheck, you get a little more discriminating. I love how tax cuts are described as "spending" as in, "We can't afford to spend $XXX on tax cuts." Apparantly all your earnings belong to the government and your paycheck is what the benevolently allow you to keep. From each according to his ability, etc... |

nijuro - Everyone needs some skin in the game IMO...it's easy to vote yourself more of someone else's money; when it's your paycheck, you get a little more discriminating. some are actual tax cuts, some are actual tax expenditures. it depends on the details for example the mortgage interest tax deduction is not a tax cut, it is a tax expenditure. It is a government subsidy to pay out home owners and benefits disporportionately wealthy home owners. |

That's nearly 15,000 per year and I don't even break 45k per year. That doesnt even include excise, property, fuel, or sales taxes. After those, it's much closer to 50%. Pfft, free loading middle class cocksuckers.... |

The whole 50+% thing is usually just income tax. It doesn't take into account payroll tax, property tax, etc |

Death and Taxes - Correct. And you will hear people say, like some of the above posters, that they get taxed @ 30%, but like most middle income tax payers, they get the majority of their taxes back, minus FICA taxes at end of year. The majority of tax income to the Unites States treasury comes via the 2%. |

Hubris - You've completely missed my point and I don't need a lecture. I was speaking to generic class-warefare rhetoric, not specific parts of the passed deal. The mortgage-intrest deduction is not a true subsidy, it's really an incentive. A subsidy would be a rebate or other form of payout to help you pay your mortgage interest. This is merely the gov't incetivising home "ownership" (but only when the bank owns your home) by saying that they will take less of your money if you meet certain conditions, i.e. having a mortgage with an interest rate. By clasifying it as a tax expediture you're buying into the premise that the govenment "owns" the money you pay in taxes and "spends" it by taking less of it. Sorry, but I don't accept that predication. |
