imo, british actors are generally really good with the American accent

there are some actors that i didnt even realize were british until i looked them up bc their accents were very accurate

guys like Hugh Laurie and a couple of the guys from Homeland are really good but every once in a while you can hear a small slip up of their british accent

i think Christian Bale is the GOAT american accent from a brit ...you literally can't even pcik out hints of his british accent at all, at least i can't

Brits.....which american actors perform an accurate British accent? i can barely think of any....maybe Johnny Depp...although i can hear his american accent here and there

maybe meryl streep?

I am a huge fan of The Black Adder and have seen all the episodes of Jeeves and Woster, but it still took me almost a whole episode before i recognize Hough Laury. His accent is so good I just didnt conect him with being British. Phone Post

Don Cheadle's cockney accent in Oceans 11 makes me want to set myself on fire.

Also-Dick Van Dyke is the most obvious answer

An American "accent" is generally pretty neutral, which is why Brits have no problem imitating it. We have regional accents of course which are not as easy to imitate and that's where they seem to have an issue. So basically, what I'm saying is that Americans actually have to imitate or adopt a British accent while Brits only have to mask their own.

Its a much more sophisticated accent and is not so easy to imitate. I can't think of many.. Depp is reasonable I suppose.

No talk about actors and accents can do without this gem though:

That one blew my mind... I never would have guessed cuz not only does he do an American accent, he does a southern accent which I would imagine would be much more difficult than your standard midwestern accent we usually hear.

Jamie Bamber from BSG is another one... But he credits his ability to pull one off so well to his American father.

What trips me out is alot of these British actors have almost feminine voices when they speak in their native accents but then they turn around and pull off these very manly and gruff American accents.

I find that when Americans do a British accent, they tend to do what they think a British accent sounds like not what one actually sounds like. This maybe down to a fact that there are many different British accents and they end up taking sounds and sayings from different parts so in the end it just doesn't work.

Brad pitt did a great pikey tho.

Please tell me you are kidding about Pitt. His terrible accent made that movie unwatchable. Almost as bad as his German accent in Seven Years in Tibet.

I remember seeing an old interview with Alan Ruckman who was asked about Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and he commented on Kevin Costner getting so much shit for not attempting a English accent for that movie, and he said that the American accent is closer to the accent found amoung the British isles around the 1200's than the modern accent is.

I dunno how true that is or how one would even know, but it was still interesting...
