In Limbo -

back in 2002 when they both were just hitting it big in the mainstream

saw the White Stripes open up for the Strokes at Radio City Music Hall.....

i mean the strokes were good and all, but jack and meg white destroyed it as the opening act..something about the ambiguosly related? (brother/sister...husband wife) guy/girl duo, it was a really charming performance..looking back it was a sort of a "coming out party" for both bands that ended up being huge....it was literally the show that clinched their rock stardom

They were married, but actually got divorced before anyone knew who they were.

As for concerts: Alice in Chains was amazing live when I saw them, but Hurt opened, and I thought they were slightly better. Both were a great show.

Was at a festival, don't remember all the opening acts, but Stone Temple Pilots were the headlines, but Staind, Hinder and Five Finger Death Punch all opened and all killed it.

Willie Nelson opening for Bob Dylan. Willie was amazing. We left a couple songs into Dylan's set.

I'm sure there are more, I'll try to think of them.

Jesus Lizard for Ministry

Ice Cube at first Family Values. Most people were wondering what Ice Cube was even doing there, then he blew everyone away.

Foo Fighters for Rage Against the Machine. I wasn't a fan of Foo Fighters and still am not really, but they were really good live.

Hed PE for Slipknot

Saw Dredg open up for Chevelle at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco circa 2004. I was actually a Chevelle fan at the time, my buddy told me Dredg was awesome but I didn't know much about them. They hit the stage and it was like a religious experience. They played all the songs from el cielo and it was amazing. Chevelle couldn't touch them. Phone Post

I saw Sublime at one of the first warped tours and virtually every band was better than them. Shame they sucked it live. They sounded like a garden variety punk band one would see at a backyard party.  This was when they were promoting 40ozs to Freedom. I expected something, I don't know, that sounded somewhat like the album.

Saw Korn open for megadeath at a small club in portchester NY.

Only song I knew from Korn was "chutes and ladders" as the local rock station was playing it.

Lights go down, lead singer comes out with the bag pipes and I'm like wtf. They start playing and it's fucking anarchy. God damn what a great show.

Megadeath was good, but korn stole the fucking show that night. Phone Post

Korn did that to a lot of bands. Love em or hate them they put on a great show. A buddy of mine who does't like them went to se Linkin Park (lol) a few years back and said Korn had everyone going crazy and then they were dead for LP.

Done similar things to Marilyn Manson, Hole, Metallica, and more.

Their recent work has bummed me out but I'll still happily watch a live show anytime.

Circa late 90s Houston - Garbage opened up for Smashing Pumpkins. Garbabge blew them out the water so much so that someone threw a shoe at Billy pumpkin and he stoped the show bitching about  it.  They sounded horrid live for some reason. Side note....Shirley Manson rocked a short red dress and you could see her panties. Fucking hot...

lol Nitecrawler I was at that Faith No More, Metallica GNR show too. We left after waiting about 30 minutes. It was too hot and we had come for the first two anyway. I saw Faith No More open for Billy Idol at Byrne arena and it was the same deal. Faith was awesome and Billy was OK but nothing special.

Rick_Cain - I saw Bad Religion open for Blink 182 about 10 years ago. It was embarrassing how much better they were then Blink. Although the 12 year old girls who were there to see blink 182 didn't seem to care. Phone Post

Saw se7endust, Korn & Disturbed in AC a few years ago. Korn was uninspired and looked like they were dying to get back on the tour bus. The other two killed it. They kept the keyboard player hidden in the back of the stage in the dark too. lame.

The Aquabats opening for Blink 182 and Long Beach Dub Allstars. Aquabats KILLED it.

System of a Down opening for HedP.E.

Machine Head opening for Megadeth. Megadeth was great, but Machine Head put on probably the best show I've ever seen.

Those opening bands have a lot to prove so they tend to play with more passion.

I guess a shitty example of this would be once I saw dashboard confessional (gross I know) open for Sparta . Sparta was really good but you could tell D-board had something to prove. Phone Post

Ham and Egger - Gaslight Anthem opening for Rise Against. Had to pay 60 bucks for the fucking ticket just to see the opening band. Shit load of people left after Gaslight played.
Rise Against is usually really good live too. That was probably an awesome show, I enjoy both bands. Phone Post

Folly opening for Stretch Armstrong
Catch 22 opening for Sublime w/ Rome

Not really an opener, but Devil Driver and Hatebreed being on one of the side stages at ozzfest before Ozzy and Lamb of God went on. I believe Atreyu was also on the side stage but Devil Driver and Hatebreed's sets really stood out. The pits got insane for those two bands. Phone Post

Nitecrawler - I've seen a ton of concerts in my time and sometimes the opening act is the best part of the show.

Two concerts that stick out in my mind:

Toadies opening up for Bush at Irving plaza in NYC ~95. The first opening band was called "Gigantica" with a chick lead singer and they were fucking horrid. The toadies come out and blow the fucking roof off the place. Bush comes out and gives a very uninspired performance so much so that people are chanting "Toadies...Toadies" half way through their set.

Another one that stick out in my mind is Faith No More, Metallica & Guns N Roses at Giants Stadium. Faith no More comes out and kills it as does Metallica. Then in true GnR fashion GnR doesn't go on for about 3 hours and when they come on they absolutely sucked it.

What concerts have you gone to where the opening act rocked and the headliners sucked it?
Foo fighters opening for bob Dylan Phone Post

CaptainWoody - I have 2 and both with the same headlining band. Aerosmith

One was a pretty well known local guy opening (he had one hit) Johnny Lang

And Jackyl was the second, both kicked the shit out of Aerosmith.

Why I went to see Aerosmith twice is anyone's guess

I went to see Aerosmith because Skid Row opened for them, and yes Skid Row as better imo.
