Is it just me, or does it seem Fallon truly hates doing his show? I tried to watch it. I didn't laugh once, and he constantly looked like he was miserable. Like his brain had checked out and he was just going through the motions. |

Ferguson is the only late night host I'll watch. Conan has moments, but so much of his humor is self-gratifying inside joke stuff that I get bored quickly.

Agree with those saying Fallon is unwatchable. And I mean that literally. Sometimes he'd have someone on I wanted to watch, I'd try, and last 3 mins max. Who gives that guy ratings? |

Well it didn't work out with Conan and he's actually the funniest of them all. It's gonna bomb hard with Fallon.

ProteusSFM - Leno blames poor lead in ratings for his decline in viewers but his shitty primetime show killed lead in ratings for Conan. yup! |

The key issue is whether Jay Leno wants to retire. By all accounts, he doesn't. He doesn't vacation. He doesn't do much of anything except work and fuck with his cars. This is what got NBC into such a mess when trying to replace him with Conan back then. Leno didn't wanna retire. So when it came time to make the switch, Leno started talking to other networks about a new late night show. This was NBC's worst nightmare because he was the #1 in his slot (which begs the question of why they wanted to replace him with Conan in the first place and a point he never understood and was very hurt by). If he jumped off to Fox or whatnot, he would just steal all his viewers. However, when renegotiating his contract for after the Tonight Show, he got what's called a 'pay and play' deal. This is important because usually, performers like Jay, Conan, Dave, etc. get a 'pay OR play' deal. Pay OR play means that if you get a 2 yr contract for a show and it totally blows or they take you off the air for some reason, they have to still pay you for the length of the contract, even if you're sitting at home doing nothing. This prevents people from jumping off to another network if a show doesn't work out for some reason. You can't work elsewhere cause you have a 2 yr contract. If you do, they sue you for breach of contract. But Jay got a pay AND play deal before he left the Tonight Show. This was a HUGE mistake for NBC. Like, epically monumentally huge (they literally had an army of lawyers look at every option to try and get out of it and they failed to find a way). It meant that in order for the network to fullfil their part of the deal, they had to pay him AND they had to put him on the air. If they took him off the air, then HE could sue for breach of contract, get them to fork over all the money for the contract AND immediately start another show on another network for a huge salary there. This is why they gave Jay that shitty prime time show. Because if they didn't, they would have had to pay him his contract salary, AND he could have walked over to ABC and gotten a late night show in direct comptetion with the Tonite Show. When his show failed, they were stuck with either buying out Jay's contract and having him walk or buying out Conan's contract and having him walk. Jay's contract was much more expensive than Conan's, so they kept him and axed Conan. I have a feeling that NBC is gonna be stuck with The Tonight Show With Jay Leno until he announces his retirement. Especially if he's still beating everyone else by 1 single viewer. He's stated that all he wants to do in life is tell jokes on TV at 11:30 at night. |

And why not? Jay is rich as fuck and actually likes his job. Sucks for others that are more suited to our generation but I can't fault him for it knowing now what pfsjkd just posted |

The thing I never understood about replacing Leno with Conan was that not only was Leno winning his time slot, usually by pretty good margins, Conan was losing his. You take the No. 1 guy at 11:35 off and replace him with the No. 2 guy at 12:35? |

DontBeScaredGomi - Conan was way better with max wineberg I think he was best right before he took over for Leno. His skits these days just aren't as good, and while I like Andy, I think Conan was better solo. (and with Max) |

The thing with Leno and the ratings, and one of the reasons NBC wanted Conan in, is that not all ratings are equal. Leno skews older, while most of the really valuable advertising money is in people under 50 (and really under 40). So NBC felt that rather than have Leno & his big audience grow older together, they wanted Conan to come in and get higher ratings with younger people, which could be more lucrative even though the actual number of viewers would be smaller. This... didn't work out :-) |
