No game today, but your Detroit Tigers make a trade sending Jacob Turner and two prospects to the Marlins for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante. |

Risky trade. Tigers are all in for winning the World Series this year.

Hopefully it will turn out at least as well as last year's deal, when they picked up Fister from the M's. So far, that hasn't come back to haunt them. |

Since I was in the Seattle area for the Iron Maiden concert, the Tigers updates are a win on Sunday vs. Toronto, 4-1, and a loss yesterday in Boston, 7-3. |

Big win tonight for the Tigers (7-5) after a questionable rain-shortened loss last night (4-1) in Boston when the game was called while Detroit had the bases loaded in the top of the 6th. |

The Tigers get a walk-off win, rallying with 5 runs with two out in the bottom of the 10th to complete a weekend sweep of Cleveland after winning yesterday, 6-1. 2/3 of the season complete and the Tigers have a record of 58-50 and are 1.5 games back of Chicago. |

So, now 2/3 of the season gone and your Tigers sit at 58-50, 1.5 games back of Chicago. A definite improvement over the first 1/3. Let's review the bats (Avg. / HR / RBI - notes): C - Alex Avila: .246 / 6 / 31 – A huge disappointment after last year 1B - Prince Fielder: .311 / 18 / 79 - Hoping for more power for the price (still – Austin Jackson has a higher slugging percentage) 2B – Omar Infante: .289 / 1 / 6 – His numbers with the Tigers (so far – 11 games) after the trade with the Marlins 3B - Miguel Cabrera: .325 / 27 / 91 – Pretty much what you expect, just a monster SS - Jhonny Peralta: .261 / 8 / 39 – He’s picked it up lately, let’s hope that continues LF - Delmon Young: .261 / 12 / 44 – Power numbers up, mostly DH now with Quentin Berry (.284 / 2/ 24 / 15 steals) and Andy Dirks (.333 / 4 / 17) playing the field CF - Austin Jackson: .322 / 11 / 49 – Very solid season, should be in the discussion for Comeback Player of the Year RF - Brennan Boesch: .248 / 11 / 46 - Needs to get hot or he'll lose his spot to Andy Dirks (probably still true) DH – See Delmon Young. Bench – Gerald Laird (.288 – solid), Ramon Santiago (.216 – versatility but no bat), Danny Worth (.206 – over .200!), Ryan Raburn (.172 – On DL), Jeff Baker (Just acquired from Cubs, .269 / 4 / 20 in 54 games) Don Kelly (.175 – finally DFA) Rotation (W-L / ERA - notes) Justin Verlander: 11-7 / 2.63 – Needs a miracle to get to 20 wins this year Doug Fister: 6-7 / 3.52 – Hope he’s finally healthy after a couple of stints on the DL Max Scherzer: 10-6 / 4.72 – If he can drop his ERA another 80 points(?) in the next 54 games I would be astounded Rick Porcello: 8-6 / 4.65 – Ok Drew Smyly (4-3 / 4.42) was the #5 guy, but the Tigers picked up Anibal Sanchez (1-1 / 4.50 in 2 starts) from the Marlins to round out the rotation Jacob Turner – Traded to the Marlins Middle Relief (ERA / IP – notes) Joaquin Benoit: 3.10 / 49.1 - Solid Octavio Dotel: 3.25 / 36.0 – Much better since first review Phil Coke: 3.65 / 44.1 – Solid Brayan Villarreal: 1.30 / 34.2 – Great numbers Duane Below: 3.40 / 42.1 – Not bad Darin Downs: 2.61 / 10.1 – Too early to tell Closer (SV/OP / ERA – notes) Jose Valverde: 21/25 / 3.71 – Much better now 33-21 over the last 54 games has them right in the middle of playoff contention. I think as long as they stay healthy and the rotation does their job, they should get a spot in the postseason. Currently 4th in MLB in hitting and 15th in pitching. |
