I dont smell anything. I heard when you clean them (I think once a year you might have to give it a good cleaning??), it can get a bit stinky. As it sits, theres no odor whatsoever. Let me know if you do it and have any questions. Ill be glad to help out if I can. |

What is the basic care and time spent in a week/month? What does it take to clean it? Where do you live? What do you do to get it ready for the winter? I know some people keep it going so it does not freeze over. Thanks, Jason |

Well, I bought very good pump/filtration equipment (it is very important to spend the extra money and get a filter with a UV Clarifier). So far I havent done any maintenance outside of the occasional skimming of a leaf or two on the surface. I add some chemicals once a week which takes about ten seconds. About the cleaning, Im not sure whats involved. I am going to take a 'winterizing' seminar this fall and maybe I will learn there. Ill keep you posted. Im still learning myself here, so Im not sure what to say about that. It gets very cold here in the winter and we get a lot of snow. I have dug the deepest part of this pond down to 4 feet. This will allow fish to hibernate safely. The important thing to add in the winter is a bubbler, or something that keeps the surface moving so that the ice doesnt completely freeze over the surface. Although the fish arent really eating much in the winter, they still produce waste and the ammonias produced need to escape the pond water through evaporation. If the water is sealed off with ice, it becomes toxic... |

GJ, Im not sure what it is exactly that I add. Ill check the label tonight. I think its more of an algae supplement than a chemical. Ill get back to you...Any tips would be appreciated! |

Well the snow is all melted. It was a tough winter in the sense that I lost two fish and Im not sure why. Im a little discouraged by it but I think I can get to the bottom of it. The pond is 4 feet deep so thats more than enough to keep fish alive over the winter. Getting it ready in the Spring shouldnt be too hard. I am going to change out a bit of the water - less than 20%. Ill submerge the pump and hook it up to my filter. Run a hose from the filter to the box at the thop of the waterfall and Im pretty much done. Im sure a few other things will pop up that Im not aware of right now. This will be the first 'opening' of the pond so.... Take pic of your project if youre able to and let me know if you have any questions. Im not an expert, but you learn a fair bit by doing something like this. Good luck. |

Well girlie, it was a tough winter. Time to see whos alive in the spring now that things are warming up, figure out what went wrong over the winter, and correct the problems. Ill post some pics in a month or two when I restock and the plants get growing :) |

Bah, no it wont Pat. I didnt know what the hell I was doing. All I had was literally a pond pic from the internet to get me started. I winged my way through it with the help of a few good books. Lemme know when youre ready to go and I download all the lessons learned so you can have an easy time with it. It was a lot of work, but really fun and exciting to do. |

I would have kept the UV off for the first 3 months. Its good later on, but in the beginning its slowing down your development of nitrifying bacteria. |

Well things are moving along. I spent much of the afternoon actually in the pond taking care of some things - Its easier to place the pump properly if Im actually in it. I cleaned some rocks off the floor and stuff. 2 out of four fish survived the winter and I am encouraged. There were false reports of a third casualty that proved to be false. I spent the last month bummed because I thought only one lived and yesterday I spotted the other. I was so stoked. The two that survived were from a koi farm about a couple of hrs away (http://www.canadiankoiandpond.ca/) . The other two were from some crappy store, so Im hoping that the finer specimens that come from the farm are more resilient. Im going up to pick up two fish that I bought online about a month ago, next weekend. Ill PP when I get them acclimated. I put four bull tadpoles in the pond when I first built it. So far Ive spotted three in the pond. I guess they burrow into the mud during the winter. Theyre really hard to spot and all I usually see when I step into the backyard is a couple of leaping blobs out of the corner of me eye and they slash into the water and swim to the bottom. At night its cool because I can hear them croaking from my bed. The first lilly pad will reach the surface tomorrow, then theyll all start coming up like crazy. Really cool to see all the plants come back after the freezing winter... That koi farm site has some cool pics of their stock on it:
