"y the fuck would they both serve 6 months if no1 got ratted out?" This and several other statements show that you actually don't understand the prisoner's dilemma as well as you think. It is stipulated within the model that if they both do not rat the other person out, that they will both serve a reduced sentence. Not as good as if they ratted out the other player who did not rat them out, but it's the second best outcome of the game. "ideally,vthe optimum desired util is attained if both players mutually acheive maximum payoff. theoretically, the model assumes that the players are selfish and want individual success." Within the prisoner's dilemma, both players cannot simultaneously acheive their maximum payoff (no jail time). It is correct to assume that the players will both act in their best self interest, however, by doing this they actually end up both serving two years. This is the third best option. Here's the rub, by acting in their own self interest they actually hurt themselves. It is actually in their self interest to cooperate. If they had cooperated with each other, they would have both served only 6 months. Neither one gains by the loss of the other player, and by working together they are both better off than before. 6 months compared to 2 years. This is the prisoner's dilemma. Public schools rock.
