Im looking for a good casting reel/rod setup for bass fishing. Looking for the best quality reel for my money in the $70-120 range. Something i can run a lil heavier line on and use for my cranks, spinners, and such. I generally fish lakes, ponds, rivers for bass in central NJ. If anyone could point me to some recommendations id greatly appreciate it. Happy Fishing |

I've never used one, but I hear Bass Pro Shops Rick Clunn Signature Series Baitcast Reels are great for the price. They're on sale for $80 right now at Bass Pro Shops |

where are you fishing? i'm in central nj, too. not much advice on baitcasters. i got a nice setup for xmas but am having a hard time getting comfortable with it after growing up with spinning reels. |

I disagree. 40 pound braid is gonna be too big for many presentations. There's some good limp low memory mono and fluorocarbon that if spooled correctly doesn't coil. I do agree that Shimano makes great reels though. |

I use 40lbs Power Pro on my Abu c36501 but that is for big river fishing. No problems with digin's but still not as nice to cast or retrieve as mono. The braid does float which can be handy in drift/float fishing. I have to ditto the Shimano reels, nice stuff all around and decent prices. We have a new Daiwa down in the shop that has the 'flippin' bar if bass is your thing. Also the new Abu lowpro baitcaster just came in, very smooth. I should grab my digi cam and snap some shots of our reel cases, we have one of the largest stocks of reels on display in western canada. My personal fav for baitcasters though is the base model Shimano Calcutta series (b?), I have a 251 for smaller stuff. The Calcutta TE series is amazing if you have the cash. |

Well i just picked up a Daiwa Capricorn 100xtc today on sale for $50. Just gotta go an pick up a decent rod. Looking for something 6'6'' medium/heavy. Lately ive been doing a lot of shore fishing locally, so im looking to run some braid, so i dont run into so many snags in weeds and twigs. Mainly fishing for bass, in the 3-5lb range. What you guys think? Probally be running mainy spinnerbaits, cranks, and maybe a few worms on this. Ballon Knotter ive mainly been fishing locally in Somerset County, but tryin to go to some new places round here. Where are you at? |

You're right. I didn't mean too big in diameter though. I meant more like too much. I just don't like braid for everything. Maybe he would. If he's throwing crankbaits with a medium-heavy rod and braid, he's gonna lose more fish than if he was using 8 pound mono. |

can't beat a pfeuger echelon reel matched with a 6'6" m all star rod both bought from dicks for a combo price of 80 bucks!!!! i'm also a central jersey bass fisherman...where are you from? |

somerset county... ive since picked up a Daiwa capricorn at Dicks on sale for bout $65 and put that on a 6'6'' mh St Croix Triumph rod. Have only fished with it a few times, been busy as shit. Really like it though. Imma need to experiment with different lines to see what casts and works the best for this setup. |
