MotorGround >> SV650 compared to yzf 600?

Looking to get back into riding, and really like the SV650S. Last bike was a 97' YZF 600, loved the bike, had more upright seating than the other 600's, really smooth. How will the SV compare to it? Mostly the bike will be a commuter(almost all highway) and I ride pretty conservativly. Will I be dissapointed in the power? From what I've read it has a more usable powerband for my type of riding. There's a 2005 for sale $4000.00 O.B.O, 10k in my area, but cant test drive it because of the snow. Seems like alot of SV riders on this forum, hoping I can get some of your input. Previous bike before the YZF was a 91' 600 Katana, plenty fast enough for me, but way to heavy. |

The SV IMO is not the best freeway bike. If you want a middleweight freeway commuter with good ergos for 4k I would look at nothing other than an f4i. They have the freeway power the SV lacks, better wind protection, better suspension and they run for freakin ever if you find one that has been maintained. Just be careful as they're popular with stunters. |

What I mean by highway is 55 m.p.h roads. I am looking at the SV650S's the hardest mostly because of insurance and riding position. Don't want to sound like a pussy, but I think the F4i would be too powerful for me. Would the SV be as smooth a ride as the YZF? Someone described the Sv more of a bike you control vs the bike controlling you and I like the sound of that. The only bikes I've rode that I thought were kind of gutless were a 90's GS500ES and a 90 Honda Hawk 650 GT (borderline). |

The SV650S has a small windscreen and does fine on the HWY. I had a SV650 (non-S) completely naked with no windscreen and I loved riding it on the HWY. You get used to the wind and eventually forget it's even there. It sounds like you are not interested in doing 150mph on the HWY so an SV650 would be a good bike for you. It has a lot of usable power and is fun to ride. You will need to upgrade the suspension if you are heavy or do a lot of 2 up riding. I don't think you can go wrong with the YZF or SV. You just have to ask, do I want my power down low or up high? |

55mph is fine. By freeway commuting I meant 70-80 for extended periods, sometimes in the wind or rain. And sometimes needing to overtake another vehicle very quickly. Its not that the SV can't do these things, its that other bikes do it better. I have a naked SV and the flyscreen is removed, it is my primary transportation. I do 200+ mile trips and its ok but not built for it like an FJR, VFR, etc.... Buy the bike for the type of riding you do. |

I would think the SV would make a great daily commuter; good usable power, good manuverability, etc. I have the S version, and love it, but after an hour or so, would prefer a more upright riding position. Back and forth to work, which is only a 20 minute ride each way for me is great. I wouldn't want to try 500 miles ina day on an S version. |

Too late, I bought the SV650S. Went and looked at it yesterday, took it down the street, froze my ass off. It looked brand new, and actually felt more powerful than I thought, loved the power on the bottom. I think I stole it for $3100, but I'm probably the only dumbass that buys a motorcycle late December. I decided on the SV because its more practical and cheaper insurance. Can someone post the picture of it if I email to them. I can't friggen wait til spring! Thanks for everyones input, btw. |
