and have a menstruation related question. Should I start her on tampons on maxipads? I'm thinking maxipads since sticking a tampon up there would break her hymen and take her virginity. What do you ladies recommend? |

Ten, she hasn't started yet. I'm just worried about how to deal with it. I picture myself throwing a box of maxipads at her when she starts crying in the bathroom and talking about blood "down there". Is that normally how this kind of thing is handled? |

When it comes to parenting I'm flying solo. Sadly Mr. Mcfeely I'm a mudnamer, so I can't post pics. |

Note: Red = period talk, beware. Here's the thing. She'll probably have some friends who will get their periods first, but even if she doesn't she won't want to talk to you about it. Get some pads, put them in her bathroom, don't say anything. Girls don't want to use tampons right away, but they won't break the hymen, FYI. Keep a semi-regular eye on her stash and when you notice it start to get used, just buy more with groceries. By the time she wants to switch to tampons, you'll be the coolest dad ever and she'll just be like, "Can you buy these instead?" |

So you're saying I don't need to show her how to use them? Is this instinct or something? |

Tys...i feel for ya man. My daughter is 10 and probably close to being in that situation as well. In fact, her biological changes are what have recently led her mom and i to decide she stay with her mom at least another year or two before moving with with me. it will be easier for her to deal with them. Do you have a sister/sister in law or something that can help you with this? Have you had the talk with your daughter? |

No Nelson. I was thinking about getting a Cabbage Patch Doll and boring a hole in it down there so I could show her how to use the tampon, but I don't really know what's acceptable. I don't get why I go with the Maxipad instead of the tampon, all women I know use tampons but none of them are virgins either. What if she's doing swimming or something with her school and she pulls her underpants off to have a big nasty maxipad fall out on the floor. Wouldn't the other girls make fun of something like that? |

The thing about it is that my mom never "taught" me to use a tampon, that would be mega embarrassing, and if you're worried about her getting it young, there are things like toxic shock to consider with tampons. I didn't think about swimming though... She should be able to figure it out by about 13, if you want to save yourself an embarrassing talk. If you're into doing the talking thing though, read up about it on the net and just launch in. She'll be grossed out, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. |

I have actually been reading up on it. I thought TSS only happened if you left a dirty tampon in there too long? I also read an insert and there's a whole technique to using a tampon, how do you figure that out as a kid without someone around to guide you through it the first time? |

Get ones with an applicator, then it's easy. TSS can happen if you leave a tampon in too long, which seems like it wouldn't be a big deal, but if she's not paying attention to when she put it in, it can easily happen. Also, you should get panty liners to go with the tampons, especially at first. |
