I see them at Big 5 from time to time for under $100. Seems like a good-keep in the truck ranch gun. WHat can you tell me about them |

I'll let you know in a month. I just bought one off gun broker. From what I hear, they kick like a mule, and depending on the condition of the rifle can be extremely accurate at long distances. You can drop some cash into accurizing it if you want as well. |

They have a big 5 presidents day sale on the m91-30 with the 28 inch barell($89). I am traveling 75 miles and will also play a 10am sunday hold em tourney at a nearby casino |

I got it sunday. It came with a bayonet, oil can, pouch, tools and strap I got 3 boxes of ammo. I will report back when I shoot it |

I got the ammo locally for 12 dollars for a box of 20 Online plus shipping you can get 420 rounds for 70 dollars Thats cheap for a round this massive. The issue is that you have to clean out the corrosive salts after you shoot because all 7.62x54r ammo is corrosive |

seriously though, you can pick some of the ww1 battle rifles for pretty cheap. they worked for that war, some were converted to sniper rifles. how well are they for hunting? |

It's one of my favorite firearms. Its actually a mosin nagant. I own the m44 infantry issue that accurately shoots with the bayonet out. The most important thing to do is to strip it and clean all the cosmoline out of the receiver and the bolt. Take the bolt apart and boil it to get off the cosmo off. Spray the receiver with a good degreaser and clean it all off. Most 7.62 x54 ammo is corrosive so make sure you clean it asap after the range. The kick is hard but no more than a 12 guage with 2.75 ammo. |

Range report: At the ranch we shot at an old gas bbq on a hill 300 yards away. No Bench- shoulder shot 7 hits out of 20 with most others in the near category. I love this gun- 0 and the ammo is cheap |

The issue is that you have to clean out the corrosive salts after you shoot because all 7.62x54r ammo is corrosive It's the primers that are so corrosive. Look for "Boxer" primed ammo, not "Berdan" if possible. |

I have a MN 91/59 (carbine, no bayonet). I shot my first caribou with it. Double lung shot, complete pass through with a 180gr soft point. Ran about 50 feet and piled up dead. I've never used surplus ammo, only non-corrosive hunting rounds which cost about the same as cheaper big game stuff from winchester (.30-06 power points for instance). |

The Mosin is a great rifle and is only so cheap because there are so many of them, not because it is low quality. I predict they will quadruple in price within a decade, like the SKS's did in the 90's. Read up on Simo Hayha aka "white death". So, rounds like this avoid the corrosion issues? PPU 7.62x54R Boxed Primer But, this one will still need to be cleaned quickly? Herter's 7.62x54R Berden Primed Even though both are marked non-corrosive? Still, 85 cents a round isn't too bad, I guess. |

Willybone, no Herter's is not corrosive ammo. Just because an ammo is berdan primed does NOT mean it is corrosive. Yes, some berdan primers are corrosive. But, it is almost always ONLY military surplus ammo that is corrosive, and it will always say so when you order it whether it is or not. I have a ton of Herters 7.62x39 ammo for my AK47 and it is non-corrosive. I would just go with the military surplus ammo. 440 rounds for 70 to 100 bucks depending on where you get it. CHEAP! I just pour a bit of windex down my still hot barrel while at the range when I finish shooting (helps dissolve the corrosive salts and wash them out the barrel) and then clean it with Hoppe's #9 when I get home. No big deal if you ask me, I always clean my weapons the night after shooting anyways......... |

Yeah, I should be more clear. In this country, where ammo is primed with boxer primers, manufacturers switched to non-corrosive loads many years ago. A lot of surplus ammo available from the old eastern block countries, where ammo is primed with berdan primers, is older corrosive ammo. It's not that one primer is corrosive and one isn't, just that surplus AK and Mosin ammo is often old corrosive surplus stock, and it's primed with berdan primers. Either way, just clean the weapon after firing it and you should be fine. The amonia in windex nuetralizes the salts from the primers, as does soap and water. |

Ive also heard of people just bringing a thermos of VERY hot water and pouring that down the barrel after shooting. This will wash the salts away and since it's hot, it will evaporate quickly and you wno't have to worry about rust from the water... Ive had good luck with windex so far, at the range. Then Hoppe's #9 later that night. |

Willybone - ^^Excellent! Thanks, especially for the windex tip.^^ You won't regret getting one. A gun show is a decent place to find one, usually can be had for around 85-90. You can take a bore light and actually look at the rifling and check the weapon over. One bad thing about ordering is you don't get to see it before hand, and these milsurp rifles are ALL different, and some are pretty beat up... Usually the sellers online are honest about the condition of them. Find one that is listed as VERY GOOD or Excelent. Don't get anything under VERY GOOD or you might be bummed. |
