I have a laundry list of things I'd like to spend time learning, but either haven't had time/opportunity, or have only had time for a little bit and want more. Here's my current list:
I also have a list of "related" things I want to train:
What's your list? |

Would have said Olympic Weightlifting, but I found a great gym/coach a few months ago and am loving it. As for Machida Karate, do you mean what Lyoto does (which is heavily supplemented by crosstraining in BJJ, Wrestling, and Kickboxing gyms) or do you mean doing katas and one-step sparring with his father? |

Parkour - goes in nicely with the marathon running I'm doing Weightlifting - kettlebells, barbells, dumbells, whatever - I need to get stronger Swimming - I hate water, but I already run and bike, so might as well get the third part for a triathlon Rock Climbing - good functional strength training Boxing - I've got long arms, might as well make the most of it Enshin Karate (or anything related) - Integrating Judo throws with Kyokushin style striking seems perfect Sanshou/Sanda - integrating throws with Muay Thai also seems perfect Capoeira - good for physical conditioning, and some aspects would come in handy in a fight too Freestyle Wrestling - no brainer, need the takedowns Schwingen - it's a belt wrestling style and I'm part Swiss, might as well Kali/Arnis/Eskrima & Dog Brothers - no brainer for MMA style stick fighting Krabi Krabong - on the surface it looks like it'd be a good transition between stick fighting and Muay Thai style striking Most of this stuff is available locally, and I've even got several choices. It's just about the money. Right now I'm not training anything, due to injury, but otherwise it would be BJJ, Judo and Hapkido. |

Body building, especially bench presses and pec flies. I'll be swelling. No one will f*** with me on any beach. I won't need to train any martial arts (except for spiritual purposes, of course). |

Why is savate on most people's list? LOL Mine: Savate(the complete art including lutte parisienne, le canne et baton, le couteau, etc) Krav Maga(not the mcdojo variety) Combat Sambo Systema(can't help but be curious) I also agree that physical fitness arts/skills should go hand-in-hand with defensive training. For me it would be parkour/bodyweight conditioning, swimming and minimalist running. |

"Why is savate on most people's list? LOL" Find a good savateur and go spar with him. You'll quickly find out. |

Scott Elliott - "Why is savate on most people's list? LOL" That's not a useful answer at all. You can say find a good _________ and go spar with him. You'll quickly find out. |

I disagree. I could say that about Aikido, for example, and you would be hard pressed, if not find it impossible, to find a practitioner good enough to pull anything off in sparring. As a matter of fact, I think that would be true of a LOT of styles. |

Savate has a unique approach to distancing, rhythm, angling, and timing. It is a highly deceptive striking art that still delivers tremendous power mixed with unpredictable precision. Spar with a savateur and you will quickly discover their signature range and rhythms are unique and useful. :) |

Oh, and I did my first Hojojutsu seminar this weekend. That was an interesting experience! I'd never trained Hojo before. |

As a matter of fact, I think that would be true of a LOT of styles. That's a straw man. You could say that about Muay Thai, BJJ, freestyle wrestling, folkstyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, Sambo, Judo, Boxing, Kyokushin, Enshin, and so on. What makes Savate worth training? Don't tell me to go find a good Savateur, there isn't even any Savateur within 200 miles of me, let alone a good one. |
