"Strikeforce: Evolution" salaries: Cung Le tops fighter pay with $150K, "King Mo" fined by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Dec 21, 2009 at 1:05 pm ET Despite suffering a shocking loss to Scott Smith in the night's headliner, Cung Le earned an event-high $150,000 at this past weekend's "Strikeforce: Evolution" event. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today requested and received the list of disclosed salaries from the California State Athletic Commission. The total disclosed payroll for the event, which took place Dec. 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., was $481,200. Other top earners from the Showtime-televised included main-card winner Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza ($65,000), Smith ($55,000), Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez ($55,000) and Matt Lindland ($50,000). Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, who also competed on the main card and make his promotional debut, earned $20,000, half which came in the form of a win bonus. However, CSAC officials said the fighter was fined 10 percent of his purse for an issue with his sponsor. (Lawal splashed the cage with Rockstar Energy Drink after his win.) The full payout results included: Scott Smith: $55,000 (no win bonus) def. Cung Le via: $150,000 Gilbert Melendez: $55,000 (no win bonus) def. Josh Thomson: $30,000 Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza: $65,000 (includes $10,000 win bonus) def. Matt Linland: $50,000 Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal: $20,000 ($10,000 win bonus) def. Mike Whitehead: $30,000 Antwain Britt: $10,000 ($5,000 win bonus) def. Scott Lighty: $5,000 Justin Wilcox: $5,000 (no win bonus) def. Daisuke Nakamura: $200 Alex Crispim: $4,000 ($2,000 win bonus) def. A.J. Fonseca: $2,000 Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income. In other words, these are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not represent the total amounts earned by each fighter. And for complete coverage of "Strikeforce: Evolution," check out the MMA Events section of MMAjunkie.com. |

That's damn good money for Scott Smith in comparison to what he'd make in other promotions. |

Surprised that they got King Mo for just $10/$10. Would've thought his management would've negotiated harder, given his rising star status even before the fight. And I wouldn't be surprised if Le also got a portion of the gate on top of his $150k. Same goes for Melendez and/or Josh. |

Nakamura probably got paid under the table and was only paid $200 on an official level to avoid being stung with tax. |

Yeah, because it's easy to pull off tax evasion on the IRS hosting a public mixed martial arts event with disclosed salaries... |

bryanand - Yeah, because it's easy to pull off tax evasion on the IRS hosting a public mixed martial arts event with disclosed salaries... You really think they payed Nakamura 200$ when the second least payed fighter earned 10 times more? LOL. |

how are they gonna pay Dan Henderson to come over when what he wants per fight is basically what the payroll for this entire show was? |

bryanand - Yeah, because it's easy to pull off tax evasion on the IRS hosting a public mixed martial arts event with disclosed salaries... Yes, actually it is. He is contracted to Strikeforce for X amount, they report X amount, perfectly legal. Dream, a japanese organization, doesnt have to report shit to US Athletic Commissions...they have to report it to whatever the Japanese version of the IRS is. Why do you think Mousasi got paid $2000 when he fought in November? It's all dirty...but perfectly legal. |

You guys are complaining, but that's comparable to what the UFC pays, and much more than the UFC would pay for some of those fighters. Here's UFC 104 for comparison: Lyoto Machida: $200,000 (no win bonus) def. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua: $155,000 Cain Velasquez: $70,000 (includes $35,000 win bonus) def. Ben Rothwell: $50,000 Gleison Tibau: $38,000 ($19,000 win bonus) def. Josh Neer: $14,000 Joe Stevenson: $94,000 ($47,000 win bonus) def. Spencer Fisher: $26,000 Anthony Johnson: $30,0000 ($15,000 win bonus)* def. Yoshiyuki Yoshida: $12,000 Ryan Bader: $30,000 ($15,000 win bonus) def. Eric Schafer: $13,000 Pat Barry: $14,000 ($7,000 win bonus) def. Antoni Hardonk: $16,000 Chael Sonnen: $54,000 ($27,000 win bonus) def. Yushin Okami: $18,000 Jorge Rivera: $36,000 ($18,000 win bonus) def. Rob Kimmons: $9,000 Kyle Kingsbury: $16,000 ($8,000 win bonus) def. Razak Al-Hassan: $3,000 Stefan Struve: $14,000 ($7,000 win bonus) def. Chase Gormley: $10,000 |

"You guys are complaining, but that's comparable to what the UFC pays, and much more than the UFC would pay for some of those fighters. Here's UFC 104 for comparison:" if by "comparable" you mean "the UFC payroll is twice as much before KO, sub and FOTN bonuses", then sure |

"You really think they payed Nakamura 200$ when the second least payed fighter earned 10 times more? LOL" I never said they didn't, I just laugh at people who equate this to paying guys "under the table". You do realize there is another means to pay foreign fighters without going to jail for tax fraud right? |

I find it hard to believe that anyone can fight on a UFC card and make less than 10k. That 3k that Al Hassan made after taxes will be about 1600$. The UFC pays their fighters the best, but if they want to ensure that they keep getting the best talent rather than pay the Brocks, Randys, 500k they also need to start paying the up and coming fighters a little more. |
