Mark1 - I was diving around the Mayan reef near Akumal in Mexico and saw a huge one. I was in maybe 15' of water. I glanced into the deep blue water off the reef and saw a black shape coming out if the deep. It was coming right at me and it scared the shit out if me. I just kinda froze and watched it get bigger and bigger as it came at me. He saw me and veered left. I kicked a big to try to catch him and to try to touch his fin. He saw me and "flapped" his fins a couple times and effortlessly accelerated away. But to see a big black shape coming from the deep ocean will scare the shit out of you. A little two footer went right under us. That was pretty freaky. And cool. |

cypherpunk -lesnarfan98 - a fellow fisherman pulled out a 4' ray off the pier. We were cutting it up for bait and it gave birth to 3 or 4 baby Rays. The must have been premature. Good size, 2 or 3 lbs, but they were damn near transparent. Threw them back in the water. It had to be some instinct or something. We were not far into cutting it up when it gave birth. It was still alive. |

Are they dangerous? Does a giant manta ray pose any threat to a man? It's not like it could eat a person??

Steve swam over one. The rays instinctively shoot up the barb when a shadow appears over them. I've seen it many times as a kid when the sail of my boat went over them. |

lesnarfan98 - a fellow fisherman pulled out a 4' ray off the pier. How does he pull a 4' out of the pier? I'd imagine even at that size it is still several hundred pounds heavy? |
