My friend, who is a baseball nut, made a bet with me that he would get $5 if I couldn't throw 70 and I would get $20 if I could. He also said he would give me $100 if I could throw 80, and that I should go to the minor leagues if I could throw 90. He told me he barely threw 70, but I am more athletic, 25lbs heavier, about 50% stronger, and have longer arms than he does. However, I have never thrown a baseball for speed before. I figure I can at least make the $20, what do you think? |

to throw 70 shouldn't be too hard. however, to throw 80 is a little bit harder, especially if you don't have the right technique down. 80 is quite hard, don't get blended because they all throw 90 in the majors. i pretty much can guarantee you that you can't throw 90. |

70 is throwing pretty fucking hard if you aren't an actual pitcher. I pitched in high school and the fastest I could throw was just a touch over 80 - and I was considered a pretty hard thrower for high school. So if you throw 70, I'll give you a fist bump and say that's pretty damn impressive for someone who's never pitched before. If you throw 80, I'd be fucking amazed. If I had to take a guess at what you throw - I'd guess at about 66 or 67. That's what most "athletic" guys can throw. |

Make sure to warmup good. I would be very surprised if you could throw 75+. |

OG version: My friend, former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz, made a bet with me that he would get $5 million if I couldn't throw 100 and I would get $20 million if I could. He also said he would give me $100 million if I could throw 110, and that I am better than he will ever be at baseball if I could throw 120. He told me he has thrown over 90, but I am more athletic, two times as strong, and have a longer penis than he does. However, I have never thrown a baseball for speed before. I figure since $20 million is chump change to me, I may as well take the bet for fun, what do you think? |

well...how'd it turn out...i'd be amazed if you threw 70 miles per hour i'd say the average guy with average athletic ability with out practicing alot would throw the ball aobut 63-67 mph |

qp222 - almost impossible to toss 80 No one has ever been considered a prospect throwing 80mph. If you can only throw 80 mph you should find a new sport or try to learn a knuckleball. |

I played (not pitcher) for years. I can top out at about 72 or so.... And I could throw pretty damn hard. Most of the time it was between 68-71. if you can throw 80...well, you probably can't. lol |

80 MPH is not that hard. 80% of high school pitchers with any skill can throw 80MPH....Once you get to college there isnt a pitcher on your team who throws under 85 (unless they throw a lot of junk). I think either some of you didnt play as long as you say you did or your perception of speed is way off. I have a tear in my labrum in my right shoulder and i can still throw 87-91...Not for very long though. |

Pretjah - lol @ 80% of high school pitchers throwing 80mph Are you kidding me? Where did you play? The Helen Keller institute doesnt count. I coach high school. Ive played top 25 Div. 1 baseball and i have played Semi-pro baseball. My top 4 pitchers this year all threw over 80. 78-83 MPH. They were sophmores and juniors in highschool. |

and you should pay attention to all the words i type. I said "80% of the ones who have any skill" aka people who have the talent to play beyond high school. Not the ones the coaches put in to get them some playing time. |

Other than you being full of shit? No. Maybe a single kid in my D1 high school could throw 80+ regularly (as opposed to topping out there occasionally). I know I faced some fast dudes in season, but the ratio of guys throwing 80+ to guys not was way, way, way weighted on the side of guys not. It's not anywhere near as common as you are making it out to be. At least it was 10-20 years ago. The average dude throwing 80? Laughable as is a dude joining 2 months ago trolling on the topic. Pretjah that's defenitely not true. you know that guys from div 2 and 3 teams get drafted as well? pitchers too. if you watch the div 3 college world series, it doesn't look that different to div 1. |

just for reference i was recruited to play D1 baseball (i transfered out after the first semister as they wanted to redshirt me and i wanted to play right away) on that D1 team out of the 12 players who pitched (including those that also played other positions) only 4 hit 80 and only 1 toped 85. granted that was a small D1 school but still a D1 school. |

How accurately do you have to throw? That makes a big difference too. I was an outfielder turned pitcher, frustrated the hell out of my coach because I would throw rockets from centerfield and then meatballs from the mound. But there's a huge difference between hitting the cutoff man and hitting the strike zone. I had a nasty breaking ball though. It'd go 60 feet one direction and then 400 feet the other. |
