Buying an external 1TB external drive. Are there any brands I should avoid? Any brands recommended? |

I've had good luck with seagate. Drives are like cars, everyone has a good and horrible experience with all of them. |

Yup, I wouldn't touch Seagate unless you research that particular drive number. 3.5 enclosure I'd buy $20 http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/374 2.5 enclosure I'd buy $20 http://www.eagletechusa.com/ET-CS2PESU2-BK.htm 3.5 drive I'd get http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152245&cm_re=samsung_f4-_-22-152-245-_-Product before these came out I used WD caviar blacks in the 1Tb model. The older model not the new one, very reliable. Read feedback on newegg. 2.5 drive I'd get http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136546 In a pre-made unit I'd buy a Western Digital 1Tb passport from Walmart for $150. |

Ferox, I don't buy premade drives beacuse I don't know what is inside them hard drive wise. There have been a pile of crappy drives made in the last year. I generally judge by newegg feedback. Just about all manufacturers 1.5tb size were junk. I see there is a firmware issue listed now with the 2tb samsung I mentioned. Whatever I buy I try to make sure it has an esata port. Its 3 times faster than USB 2.0 and the 3.5 enclosure I listed comes with the bracket to clip to your motherboard. And since you are big film buff I'm sure you'll fill that 2tb. Wait for boxing day sales at this point. |
