Shabazeid - Anybody heard about green tea preventing most the mercury absorption from eating predator fish like tuna and shark, etc. at the 99cent stores in California you can buy a box with 100 packets of Lipton green tea. Plenty of anti-oxidants. |

oatmeal ftw. so many ways you can prepare it too so that it doesn't get old. I can NEVER justify buying a box of ceral for 4.50 that will yield me 3 bowls of food when i can get a huge container of whole grain oatmeal for 4 bucks that will yield me about 10 bowls or more. |

Chili is a good choice: just made about 50 servings (with minced pork, ground beef, lots of beans, tomatoes, beer, spices, etc...). Very tasty, nutritious, filling. And cost less than 50$. Difficult to do better than that. |

maxxscam - I made this just now and it's actually pretty damned good. 5 cu. water, a bunch of chicken boullion, tbsp. of Goya minced garlic, some old celery and celery leaves, 1/2 a red onion, and a can of chick peas. Coupled with a little salt, pepper, and italian seasoning, I now have a big pot of soup that had an immediate cost to me of $0. Great idea. |

Here's a cheap "salsa" that I love (just had some right now, actually)- 1 can black beans (seasoned is better) 1 can diced tomatoes (seasoned is better) 1 small/medium onion, diced 4-6 ounces of Fat Free Italian dressing 1 can of corn 1 can of tuna (optional) Salt, pepper, olive oil to taste Mix it all in a bowl, and refrigerate for 2 hours. After that, you can eat it alone, with a pita, bread, on a salad, etc. Healthy, quick, easy, and keeps for a good amount of time. |

shootfightermike -No way is that one meal, and you can make it cheaper by using beans from the bulk foods section. Tomatoes are pretty cheap, so I don't see a need to buy canned (are they cheaper???). You can lose the dressing since you are already using olive oil. I don't think I have ever seen anyone put tuna in salsa (maybe I'm just isolated).WaltJ - Here's a cheap "salsa" that I love (just had some right now, actually)-so 6 dollars for a cheap 1 meal salsa???? |

bag of dried beans, bag of rice, chicken breast at 2 dollars a pound. (sometimes shop and stop has these sales) get broccoli. I live like this all the time. You need a little more than 20 bucks a week though. but this is the cheapest. When child support kicked in when I was unprepared, I had no money ever. I did lose some wieght, but I was very lean on this diet. Trust me it works. |

Another one worth noting- It's probably been said before, but make a regular effort to check the produce and meat racks late afternoon. Today, at the store across from my job, I got 8 kiwis, 2 mangoes, and a pound and a half of bananas for $4. The other day I was there, I got 6 end cuts of turkey for about $.65. Also picked up a stir-fry type mix for $1.50. The key to this? YOUR FREEZER IS YOUR FRIEND. I came right home and peeled the fruit I got today, and immediately put it in the freezer, and now I have a shitload of frozen fruit to use for protein shakes. Sure, some stuff keeps better (bananas, berries, broccoli) than others (leafy greens, etc.) when frozen, but it's well worth the time and saves a lot of money in the long run. |

Dojosensei - Important thing is to make sure you have over 1200 cals per day or your body will start shutting down. That's the difficult thing about 20 bucks a week. unbelievably bad and oversimplified look at things...if those 1200 calories are all carbs you are just as screwed as if it was 600...your body primarily essentially needs a. protein b. omega-3 fats. that's about it (not counting vitamins because they're not an energy source) |
