Help settle an argument with a friend. Was there ever a time, in your opinion, when Beckham was one of the Top 5 players in the world? |

I suppose since he was twice runner-up for WPOY, the answer is yes? |

He could strike/place a ball better than anyone else for a long time. Does that make him a top 5 player...I'm not sure, but he certainly did master one aspect of the game. |

I dont know about top 5. sure he got runner up twice, but a lot of that is fame and popularity. he was a worldclass player and one of the finest dead ball and service providers the game has seen. if your friend is trying to slight him, he is an idiot. you dont play first team on Real and United for over a decade without being a badass. |

as said, he is the best striker of the ball in my lifetime for sure. and yes he was probably top 5 for many years of his career. But that's all. |

I was watching a rundown of the '06 WC and really miss Beckham and his free kicks. |

He was part of a very good Man Utd team. But was the worst player out the midfield. People forget how good the likes of Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs were in their prime. |

He was a tremendous player. You often get people downplaying his ability, he's another that falls victim to the masses that judge players largely on how fast they are, and how well they can dribble. You know, the type of people that actually think Shaun Wright-Phillips is a good player. |

I always think about how Beckham is similar to Ronaldinho... no seriously. For all his tricks Ronaldinho's go-to move is get just a little bit of space, then hit an inswinging cross from fairly deep (like 30-40 yards from the byline), which is right on time and right on the money. He's consistently dangerous just doing that. Beckham basically does the same thing, only he hits his crosses from the right and they're outswingers. I think in his prime Beckham was a top five player, probably number four or five, but still, top five. |

Jwizard - Help settle an argument with a friend. I would have to say the answer is NO. Yes he was a dead ball specialist (emphasis on 'dead ball'), in open play, positionally he was awful (and i mean awful), he couldn't use his left foot, couldn't head the ball and lacked pace. He only scored 17 goals in over 100 appearances for england. considering the amount of free kicks he did (take it upon himself to) take, people forget he used to waste a lot as well. As 'WALES1' said he was worse than keane, giggs (and might i add scholes). So that makes him only top 4 in one team in one area (midfield). Do you really think he was top 5 in the world ??? |

Scholes was also better than Beckham. |

beckham contributed a lot to every game when at united. he worked hard off the ball and was often praised for tracking back and making tackles in his own half, only to place a perfect through-ball for the counter. i imagine he created a lot of goals, many times the amount he scored. i would say he was a fantastic player in his prime. although i always remember there being better players in the game. |

Easily top 5 during the glory years - the class of '99 And he could still hit you directly in the face with a football from 60 yards. |

No chance! He wasn't even top 5 in the great Man Utd team of 1999. |

yes, he played consistently well at the highest level for man utd then Real madrid for 10 years along with england. he is the best striker and deliverer of a pass/cross the premiership and possibly world football has seen in a long time if not ever. |

Madrid doesn't necessarily keep all the absolutely best players. They were called galacticos for a reason - had marquee names like fat Ronaldo, but those start weren't necessarily the best guys available. |
