Just watching an audience with Ali (filmed in England) and he gets asked if he could beat any man alive Boxer or not and he says he's in the process of organising a fight with a karate fighter and they will fight and can also strike whilst on the floor in a mixed martial arts fight, one of you computer freaks find and embed that shiiiiit |

Ya he ended up fighting a Japanese guy who primarily butt-scooted and threw kicks to Alis legs for the entire thing. |

To Ali's credit, he only found out it was a shoot when he arrived in Japan. |

If I recall correctly it was actually supposed to be prowrestling but Ali decided that he did (edit: didn't) want to do a fixed fight. They came up with some odd limitation on Inoki which lead to his strategy of kicks from the bottom. I heard that Ali had to go to the hospital for damage to his legs. (I'm sure there is someone here who can confirm or correct me on this) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrXzH4WOUdc Gene LeBell was the ref http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9mER2BmNRA |

Even if not exciting, still interesting MMA history. Sometimes reality isn't exciting. That's how you know it's real. |

Didn't they also make a rule that you can't strike while on the ground? |

If you are talking about the "modern" invention of MMA, that would go to the AMERICAN colonists who had 'Rough and Tumble' matches. This is documented. The rules stated that the fight continued when it hit close quarters and the ground where wrestling could be used. Biting, pinching, and other "fouls" were also allowed. So with that in mind, you could even said they were doing Vale Tudo and MMA.....America just forgot and the UFC reminded them. |

Ali was about 50 years behind Carlos Gracie sr who started Vale Tudo in Brazil in the 1920's. |

sssfRyan - Ya he ended up fighting a Japanese guy who primarily butt-scooted and threw kicks to Alis legs for the entire thing. That was because of the rules, though. They put some really crazy restrictions on Inoki in that fight and IIRC one of them was that Inoke could only throw kicks while on the ground. |

It was supposed to be an MMA fight. Ali's camp banned kicks, submissions, takedowns at the last minute. The only thing they didn't ban was sliding kicks which is what Inoki used. |
