Military style (lensatic?) vs non military compasses like a silva type. Are there advantages to one vs the other? I'm interested in working on my orienteering, I haven't done any since my boy sprout years, and it looks like some practical fun. |

I like the lensatic compass, but thats all I have ever used. The Comenga (sp?) is what is used. I would get the one with tritium or whatever it is that glows in the dark. |

I've got a SUUNTO KB-14 that I use when I am figuring out meets and bounds and it is the shit. |

I am a big fan of terrain association. Compasses are really a fall back or used for featureless terrain.
