Regardless of how shitty anyone may think they are as a concept... Does anyone know where to get a well made butterfly knife? I've only come across one in my lifetime. |

All depends on what you are willing to pay. There are many custom makers who do great work, but you will pay for their time and expertise. John p.s. I think they are pretty shitty as a concept:) |

I've ordered a few things from them and always had good service. Personally, the only knife I ever used in SD was a balisong in my teens. I had gotten a video by Michael Janich on the balisong that covered opening and closing, from basic to aerial stuff. I loved practicing with them. I had two that were identical, one I'd dulled the edges on for practice, the other I kept sharp. I did it mostly because it looked cool and actually used them in some kata back then. Janich includes some of his recommendations on using them for SD in the video, and I actually did use it like he recommended once. I was confronted with a group of people who didn't like my skin tone (being a skinny white kid walking through a non white neighborhood can really suck sometimes). I pulled the balisong, cracked a guy in the temple with it like a kubaton or yawara, then opened the knife while screaming "get the F*** back". It worked. |

I love them. I like knives. I like dexterity toys like yo-yos. The balisong is a perfect combination for me. They're not the ideal combat blade like I once thought, but I do love them. I'm always pissed that they're illegal to carry in so many places. If they were legal, I'd be carrying a Benchmade every day. As it is, I can't justify spending $200+ on a knife I can only keep at home. I bought the Spyderco balisong. The quality is superb, but the design is a little too out-there for practical use or carry. |

Right now is one of the best times to be interested in them. There are tons of makers making them For years Benchmade was pretty much the only source of high quality balis. There were some imports, but they were cheap. Now there are a large number of custom makers that have been encouraged by the hardcore collectors to make them. Darell Ralph was one of the eary custom makers to go down this road. Check out The Balisong Collector's website http://www.balisongcollector.com/ . He has tons of customs and lots of pics on the site. http://www.balisongxtreme.com/ is another site to check out. Classic Jody Samson custom balis from the early bendmade days go for $1000+ depending on the knife, some exceed $2000 and a few I would pay more for if they became available. |

A modern folder is better for the use as a palmstick and a fast opening. Filipinos don't fight with their balisongs, to my knowledge never did. |

MOB U2 -Filipinos fight with the knives they use to harvest cane sugar and other things. The original Balisongs were fashioned with toothbrush handles. They were patterned after a very large blade with handles. The only fighting with balisongs you see are in the movies or modern day wannabes.WidespreadPanic - Filipinos don't fight with their balisongs, to my knowledge never did.  I was becoming proficient with a balisong when you were probably still in diapers (1980-ish). See Sonny Umpad's book. They fought with 8" blades and machetes. Balisongs were for dexterity. |

Never been to the Philipines, but did go to school with a guy from there and did a lot of training with him. He said he'd seen quite a few fights with balisongs as they were easy to conceal and nobody thought twice about someone carrying them. He said they were the general use utility knife in his hometown and just about everybody carried one but nobody carried bigger stuff, like machetes where he lived. He did grow up in a larger city he said, so things could def be different in the country areas. This was 99-2000 btw. |

My uncles from all 4 parental sides (Filipino bilateral kinship of mother and father's parents) - were all Filipino military, LEO's, and bodyguards for politicians. The most COMMON knife attack was done with a balisong. Some people I know have died at the hand of the balisong, including a professor of mines in Manila. All the bulletproof vests I've looked at were either damaged by bullets, balisong, or icepick. In that order. And NO, the original Balisongs were NOT made of toothbrush handles. That was a common ad hoc style of Filipinos. I have spent time in Batangas and my friends' families are Balisong makers there in barrio Bali-sung. I asked them the Cacoy Hernandez tale of toothbrush balisongs. No they were not common, and they do have super old balisongs made out of jeep leafsprings and cheap sheetmeal. If you were saying you learned balisong in the 80s, then I was learning balisong at the same time. I was about 6 and grew up with people carrying balisong everyday, throwing them up in the air, and using them to cut boxes and rope as a daily cutter since box cutters and folders weren't common among their group. You should get out more and stop believing everything you read as Bible fact. |
