http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/play/snake-oil-supplements/ This website gathers information on actual scientific studies about supplement and ranks them from "none" (no effect by daily intake of these supplement) to "strong" (backed by very strong research). It's called the snake oil list, because after glancing through it, and reading some of the published papers. It quickly becomes apparent that most people waste their time and money on highly marketed, yet poorly researched products. The bigger the circle means that particular supplement has had a lot of inquiry through google search. The orange circles mean there hasn't been enough research done to be conclusive. Enjoy & Happy researching. |

Thanks will check it out. Many "scientifically proven" supplement studies are pretty much like cosmetic studies , paid for by the companies, poorly done, and draw a very long bow in the conclusions. |

Looking at that pic reminds me of something I saw on TV a while back. It stated that all life has a similar amount of total heart beats no matter what they are (cant remember the total they said) but the animals that have faster heart beats ... mostly smaller animals... live shorter and the ones with slower heart beats live the longest Dont know if its true but it was on NatGeo or Discovery health or one of those legit channels |

Evidence: Folic Acid - Folate protects preggos' babies from certain birth defects. It's fairly easy to eat a junky diet and have low folic acid levels. Do healthy men who eat right need extra folic acid? No. Green Tea - Good Probiotics - Only if you have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) Selenium - hard not to have enough in a good diet in the US; take it to relieve symptoms of chemotherapy Vitamin D - Good - take extra, but be cautious, ramp up slowly and be aware it's a fat soluable vit and can accumulate (unlike water-soluable) Cranberry - if you have UTIs (urinary tract infections) Fish oil - read the label, use the calculator but don't go hog wild Licorice root - if you have a cough Olive leave extract - if you have high BP St. Johns' Wort - if you have psych problems Red yeast rice - if you have high BP Valerian - if you have depression, or sleep problems (V tea) Omega 6 - good for everyone Tyrosine - alertness (may be more noticeable in some people) NAC - promising (used with ALA) Cocoa - dark chocolate - a super food Creatine - for cognition (rather than hydrated muscles) Calcium - take it with Vitamin D Hawthorne - if you have high BP Peppermint oil - if you have irritable bowel syndrom (IBS) Cinnamon - if you have history/type II diabetes Devil's claw - chronic pain (?) --------Worth it-------- ^ I take bulk MSM/Chondroitin/Glucosamine and it works but I have hip pain. I also take MSM lotion topically. I take Vit E (small doses) since it helps if you get any rancid fish oil I take Mg due to some muscle cramping from sweating from working out. I take extra Zinc (lozenges) if I have a head cold I don't take CoQ10 because it's too expensive to take the mega-doses needed for an 'internal' effect. The Alpha-tocopherol (Vit E) is good enough I do aloe vera externally and if I have a cut or slight burn. I grow my own aloe. Not sure about eating it. I take Krill Oil because of its absorbtion and bio-availability with my fish oil I get my Vitamin B8 (Inositol) in foods (nuts, grapefruit) I don't take bromelain (or any digestive enzymes) b/c I have great digestion and a "cast iron" stomach, apparently. Lycopene, quercetin, polyphenos - I get in foods (tomatoes, onions etc.) Misspelled - Phenalaline - should be phenyalanine (DLPA) near the bottom middle of the chart. ---- Anyway that's my analysis from 30-40 years of taking supplements, FWIW. Remember, some you take externally, some you take if sick, some you take if congenital problems, so YMMV. Your body, your science experiment. |

dojo stormer - so does whey proteins help with recovery after training? Combinatiion of the two. One fast absorbing the other less spike of insulin, IIRC. It's the timing, the additional protein, the biological availability of the nutrients. |

dojo stormer - so does whey proteins help with recovery after training? If you drink milk, you are most likely getting enough casein. Add whey for a protein which your body can digest quickly. |

there simply cannot be "evidence" for everything and more importantly for EVERYONE. I take some "questionable" supplements that have no defined mechanism of action yet I totally feel the effects, I've even given it to my girl (Bacopa and Choline for example that I've read on Longecity, some people having no effects, some adverse and some positive) and she said she was a lot more attentive and productive at work that day. And she didn't know what she took, I told her it was "vitamins" but still a great site :) |

been doing some research on glucosomine as i've just had surgery on my meniscus. from what i've read, there isn't hard evidence to suggest that it actually works to relieve pain or help with recovery of joints. also, the specialists i have spoken to have said there's nothing that can help arthritis or the onset of arthritis. so don't waste your money. |

here's another good site, that provides real evidence on things that work, or how they do: http://www.ergo-log.com/ |
