I actually just finished looking through his record as a Def co-ordinator (slow day at work). His record is not spectacular, but it is also not bad. He has a couple of lights out seasons, and the rest are good to average. In his favour he has never had a period where his defense was consistently bad. They are mostly solid to excellent. The big question is do you have the guys to play 3-4. Do you have someone who can play NT? Will they shift Mario to play a Demarcus Ware type role? Do you have a Middle Linebacker that can stuff the inside? |

He will improve the defense. It literally can't get any worse. But he is not the answer. The biggest problem is that Kubiak never has his team ready to play in big games. this team needs motivation & leadership. |

Waylay - I actually just finished looking through his record as a Def co-ordinator (slow day at work). His record is not spectacular, but it is also not bad. He has a couple of lights out seasons, and the rest are good to average. In his favour he has never had a period where his defense was consistently bad. They are mostly solid to excellent. Mario is a beast and will produce in any scheme. Bruce Smith put up big numbers as a 3-4 DE and I expect Mario to perform to his potential now that he finally has a good coach and do the same. I think they will work out ways to stand him up as an OLB depending on the situation. Texans didn't exactly have the personnel to run a 4-3 based on how the season turned out so I am not concerned about a switch. Antonio Smith and Mario are big/strong enough to play 3-4 DE. Need to find a NT though that will make the defense go... but Phillips' 3-4 D's do not require a massive NT (Jay Ratcliff has success in Dallas). Texans are oozing LBs to run a 3-4 (Cushing, DeMeco, Diles, Sharpton and Connor Barwin will shift to OLB where he was projected to be drafted anyway). If anything, they have less holes to fill to get a successful 3-4 than with a 4-3 (because they have a good coach for a 3-4...) Amobi Okoye may be the odd man out, but he couldn't produce like a top 10 pick in a 4-3 anyway. Texans need a ballhawk at safety to provide the young CBs over the top help, a NT, and I would like them to make a run at a guy like Champ Bailey or Terrance Newman to help turn the D around. I could also see them picking up a 3-4 OLB if they would prefer to have Cushing play ILB beside Ryans or they are not confident that Barwin will be fully healthy by the time the season starts. |

It was hilaripus how badly Kubiak threw his 2nd handpicked HC under the bus at the end of the season. He even blamed the uncharacteristic special teams problems this year on Frank Bush pullong the quality STers due to injuries!!! I keep hearing Kubiak is a "nice guy" but that is 2 DCs in a row HE PICKED that he threw under the bus to save his own ass.
At least Wade Phillips went down with his assistants in Buffalo despite being given the opportunity to pull a Kubiak.

I never seen a head coach more scared to work with strong personalities or coaches he doesn't know well. |

Well after nine games I guess Wade was the answer, on the defense side at least. Look at some of these improvements; (2010 ranking/2011 ranking) Total Defense 30th / 1st Scoring Defense 29th / 3rd 3rd down defense 23rd / 4th Opp completion % 27th / 1st Defensive passing ypa 31st / 3rd Def. passer rating 32nd / 2nd Last season the Texans posted a Defensive Passer Rating of 100.5, one of only ten teams to be over 100 defensive passer rating in a season. This year they are allowing a passer rating of 66.9. Wade Phillips is the co-ordinator of the year for sure. *Stats pulled from the following article sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/kerry_byrne/11/09/texans.defense/index.html |

Wade's a defensive coordinator at heart. Just not the head coach.

Would have been great if Mario was still there. They are doing pretty well for a first year defense converting to 3-4. Im sure they will get even better next year too especially with drafting more defense. |

That defense will be fine all year as long as they don't lose Cushing or Joseph. |

SiftMyMind -TheRealJoker - Harbaugh is making every new coach look bad. It is not just the wins and losses. You watch a couple of 49ers games and you see they are a well coached side. They are playing really smart football. This team will not gift anyone a win, it is going to be a good team playing a strong game that beats them. Hell, he deserves coach of the year just for making Alex Smith look like an NFL quarterback. |
