Andy the man - Anyone on here practice it or a fan at all ? There is a lot to be admired in certain schools of Buddhism and the kinds of results it produces in terms of more balanced and peaceful individuals. I also admire that like Christianity, Buddhism points to the notion that something is wrong in our existence as humans. We are broken and have to be fixed. It is in how the fixing is to take place that I depart from Buddhist belief. |

i went to a buddhist temple and medatated (sp?) before i was truely a christian, not that i ever believed in its teachings or anything. I believe in Jesus Christ as my lord and savior but i do appreciate medatation, its calming. I remember sitting there and having a bug land on me and start sucking my blood (misquito) and i didnt move cause i was concentrating, The whole experience was awesome and i liked it alot but i obviously feel that Christ is real and salvation is through him, so i dont look into it. I went with a friend and it was cool I do recommend meditation though, very calming. |

Ridgeback -Andy the man - Anyone on here practice it or a fan at all ? well put. The two religions are very similar, but they do differ where it matters to me. Both believe in being good people, treating people with respect, animals with respect, both believe in keeping the body pure of drugs, things like that. but the big difference is the whole going to heaven vs getting enlightened thing |

Andy the man - Care to elaborate more on the ' It is in how the fixing is to take place that I depart from Buddhist belief' part please as im just dipping my toe in the water so to speak when it comes to this stuff .in buddism they believe that if you keep getting reincarnated and in each life you are a good person you will eventually be enlightened (like buddha was) christians believe that salvation is through christ so we strive to be more christ like, and in doing so we get our seat next to god in heaven not so sure about jews beliefs anymore.... i believe that is what ridge is talking about, he likes the ideas behind buddhism, ie the being a good person and stuff but believes in god and heaven not reincarnation and enlightenment sorry if im way off base ridge |

zen type meditation can be done by a Christian with no doctrinal conflicts prayer combined with meditation can be quite a potent combination for growth |

it has many provable points and some questionable ones. It is most likely the place where the story of jesus was stolen from. |

Both advocate the renunciation of bodily instincts, attachment to material objects and attachments to our worldly lives and selves. Amongst many other similarities. |

I was thinking more in terms of similarity of life, not philosophy, core values, or belief system.

Buddhism seems to attract a lot of westerners with a distaste for their culture's religious legacy - people who would say the Abrahamic religions are superstitious and based on supernaturalism. The amusing thing about this is that the way Buddhism is practiced by the majority of Buddhists in the world makes it really no different from most religions. Buddha is worshipped like any other supernatural being in other religions and people will pray to Buddha (as well as the other lower-case buddhas) and ask for him to intervene in their fortunes and fate. There are even the equivilent of saints in Buddhism and a sign that a certain person has become a Buddhist saint is that his body will not decay after death - which is pretty much the same as Catholic saints. Hell, when I was in Taiwan a couple of years back I even remember watching TV and seeing Buddhist monk televangelists trolling for donations. Also the images of seeing people visiting Buddhist temples and kneeling before a golden statue of Buddha and praying was a pretty common sight. |
