Place your camera on a sturdy tripod. Use a lens that has a minimum focus distance of about 1 foot. Set the aperture to f/5.6. Attach cable release to camera, gut in position with your ass facing camera. Half press the cable release to focus and then push down all the way to trigger shot.

Uh... no. B&W adds a certain amount of drama to almost any photo. Also, I think it give scenes a nostalgic feel that most people like. Further, B&W "masks" a lot technical issues in photos. Like overexposure, white balance issue, noice, etc. Photos tend to look better in B&W. Well... let's just say a crappy photo will better in B&W than color.

BTW, I love to shoot B&W but not everything.

I got a Canon Rebel T3 a few months back, and would like a lens with more zoom. Problem is I'm a cheap bastard. What are my options? I don't mind paying for a quality product, one which I'll be satisfied with, but I've seen lenses that are more than I paid for the camera. Phone Post

"IF" is the proper word there. I've been hearing about the D800 for the last 2-3 years. IF it does come out, it will be the D700 with more pixels and video. I don't do video and although I wouldn't mind the extra pixels, for most of the photos I take, its a waste. I rarely print anything bigger than an 11x14 so my 13K megapixels is more than enough. I already eat up hard drive space like crazy.... 26K will mean I eat it up twice as fast.

In summary, for most people, the D700/D800 is way too much camera.

SLR - Single-Lens Reflex - basically, the camera has a moviing mirror that allows the photographer to look through the view finder and see through the lens, like a parascope.

The D in DSLR just indicates it captures the image on a digital sensor instead of a section of film.

Non-SLR cameras, you aren't looking through the lens; you're looking the a view finder.

Because 99% of people think that taking great photos = having a really good camera. Like everything else, they want the latest/greatest just because they think they should have it or they need it when in reality, the current camera they have would take fantastic photos if they learned how to use it.

What's the first question I get asked when someone sees one of my photos? "What kind of camera do you have?"

Good glas is typically going to cost your more than your camera body. Before I answer, what are you planning on shooting that you need a longer zoom lens?

Hmm... good question. What "kit" you get really depends on what type of photography you want to focus on. If you want to shoot people, then the lenses you'll use are much different than what you need for landscape work... or sports... or wild life.

I would look up pro photographers that shoot the style/genre of photos you want to shoot. Study their work. Learn about composition. Join a photo group and/or some photo forums. Take some workshops. There are a ton of things you can do.

Give me more info on the specific stuff you'd like to shoot and I can help more.

Couple of questions:

1. my camera has these settings:
L - 12m 4000x3000
M1 - 6m 3826x2112
M2 - 2m 1600x1200

If Im mainly using the photos on my computer and sometimes (rarely) print them.
Can I get away with M1?

Can you explain these different modes and what exactly they do?
Super Vivid - I know it makes colors look different, but whats happening? etc...
Poster Effect
Foliage
Snow

Thanks

Different things I guess. A lot of outdoor things like the zoo or at a park.

If you're only displaying the photos on your puter, then M1 is fine. And actually, you should be ok printing m1 as large as an 8x10. Even M2 will work to display on your puter. My 22" monitor has a screen resolution of 1680x1050 so the 1600x1200 of M2 will only slightly upscale the photo length wise. Not a problem and it shouldn't degrade the quality at all but I wouldn't try printing it bigger than 5x7.

Super Vivid - I know it makes colors look different, but whats happening? etc...
- Probably boosting color saturation and maybe the contrast as well.

Poster Effect
- had to look this one up because this is camera specific. Looks like it punches everything up. Boosts the contrast and punches the colors by combining similar shades of the same in color, in the image, into one color.

Foliage
- Probably boosts the browns and greens in the photo.

Snow
I would guess that it adjust the white balance and also sets the exposure compensention so it overexposes the image a bit (Makes it brighter) since the camera will want to make a snow scene very nuetral and you end up getting grey looking snow.

What suggestions would you have for an amateur photographer (with zero training) to learn how to use and get good at using a DSLR?

I was thinking of taking some classes at the local community college to get the basics. I recently bought a Canon 60D, but most of what I know is from books and trial and error. I would love to have some better instruction.

Should I take classes? Book recommendations? Go shoot at the zoo with a knowledgeable friend?

:) Cali
