I am going to be buying a PRS in August, and I am having trouble deciding which to get. Here are the 2 choices that I have narrowed down to. Color is decided. Neck profile is the same for both. The difference right now is that the custom 24 has 24 frets, and 2 humbuckers with coil split. The Studio has 22 frets with these new type of "narrowfield" pickups, push/pull pots. Both are around $3200. I already have a Gibson SG, a Fender Strat. 2011/2012 PRS Custom 24 - Pattern thin neck 10-Top model has been updated for 2011 with V12 finish, a Pattern Thin mahogany neck, and uncovered 59/09 pickups wired for the redesigned 5-way blade switch, which offers a dual humbucker option for the first time. V12 Finish Finish should enhance the look, sound, and feel of a guitar by accentuating the wood's inherent beauty and feel without hindering its natural resonance. And PRS Guitars' new "V12" finish does just that. Introduced at Experience PRS 2010, "V12" is a very thin, hard, and clear finish that will not crack or react with thinners. After roughly 12 years in development, it is halfway between acrylic and nitro but with a classic feel all its own. "PRS models with this new finish feel like old instruments," said Paul Reed Smith. Pattern Thin Neck Shape Neck shapes have always been a high priority for PRS and a hallmark of our quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like "home," as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. The "Pattern Thin" neck is an updated version of PRS's traditional Wide Thin neck. This new neck shape reflects modern tooling and programming that allows us to even more preciously shape and consistently reproduce our necks. Features
![]() 2011/2012 PRS Studio - pattern thin neck PRS's new 22 fret, 25" scale length Studio model electric guitar is a fresh, modern rendition of a traditional single-single-hum guitar set up with the beauty and brightness of a maple top. The possibilities are vast with PRS's proprietary 57/08 Narrowfield pickups in the middle and bass positions in conjunction with a 57/08 humbucking bridge pickup. The Narrowfield™ pickups focus the string attack much like a single-coil but are hum canceling. The result is a new sounding pickup system, which blends features of single-coil, soap bar, and humbucking pickups. Screaming lead tones, crisp rhythm tones and 5-way blade switch also enhance the flexibility of this guitar in the studio or on stage. Features

I prefer the Studio. I dislike 24 fret guitars and the Narrowfields sound FANTASTIC. Id put a hotter pickup in the Bridge though. I love the 59/09 in the custom but hate the 24 fret neck sound. |

I have heard mixed reviews on the narrowfield pickups. What don't you like about the 24 fret necks?

I agree with tj, 24 frets puts the neck pickup out of position to get a nice, round creamy tone. 22 frets allow for pick up placement that gives more variety. The Studio is my favorite PRS design to date. |

Ya it pushes the neck pickup in a bit and takes it out of the sweet spot. I hate neck humbuckers at the best of times so I really love the output the Narrowfields have while still having some bite and 'single coilness'. I agree that the Studio is my favorite PRS to date. I like it with the Pattern Thin neck and a Trem best. |

man, my mind would be made up if they had put a 59/09 in the bridge. |

Racer X -I am going to give someone a call about this. Do you think there would be any reason why it wouldnt be a good idea to have a 59/09 installed? I am wondering if the hotter bridge throws off the intended combination with the narrow fields?Dajuisher - |

I found out about the new Artist package available for the Studio and other models. Pretty cool stuff. http://www.prsguitars.com/index.php/news/story/prs_artist_package I contacted a Dealer and he is getting more info for me on adding the 59/09 uncovered pickup to the Studio. |
