Via: www.mmamania.com What's in a name? Not much, especially when that name happens to be "interim." It's a title that has routinely meant very little in mixed martial arts (MMA). A fighter is either the champion or he isn't. Yet, fans of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) have had to endure several such charades, in which we were forced to pretend that an interim belt actually meant something. Such is currently the case in the UFC's welterweight division, as Carlos Condit holds on to the interim belt, which he earned in a hard fought victory over Nick Diaz at UFC 143 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Feb. 4, 2012, as he waits for current champion Georges St. Pierre to recover from a knee injury that has sidelined him since last December. "The Natural Born Killer" has been adamant about his desire to stay on the shelf, play it safe, and not take any other fights until he gets the title shot he feels he deserves...until now, that is. Condit was recently interviewed by HDNet's "Inside MMA," where he discussed his plans for the future. By the sound of it, the interim champion may be coming around to the idea of taking another fight, while he waits for the return of "GSP."
Those were the comments made by Condit to "Inside MMA's" Ron Kruck. Apparently, he's not over his only loss in the Octagon, and who can blame him? Fans will remember Kampmann as the big winner from last weekend's (June 1, 2012) main event at The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale in "Sin City," as he mounted a big comeback win and knocked out Jake Ellenberger with a brutal knee that landed square on the button of "The Juggernaut." A rematch between Condit and Kampmann would make for a fight that many were clamoring for after seeing Kampmann's last win. It makes a lot of sense, especially since the last time the two fought, the results came down a very close split decision that could have gone either way. At this point, it's a fight that is nowhere near being put together, but every month that St. Pierre remains out of action is another step closer to it becoming a reality. The real question is this: Is November too long a wait?

There should have been a guarantee in the pre-fight contracts that either nick or Carlos had to fight at least once before GSP's return. |

I guess getting to walk around and call yourself the champ was more important. |

I think Kampmann wins the rematch as well. I'm more interested in Kampmann/GSP anyways |

Othello - Unify the belts?? I like Condit but that is such a stupid statement on his part. why is it stupid...he wants to be the champ or a contender...not an interim champ that gets zero respect. |

sacredhate -Othello - Unify the belts?? I like Condit but that is such a stupid statement on his part. It's stupid because he has not even defended the "interim" belt. Why even have an interim belt if you are just gonna sit out for 9 months? The interim belt is basically a "free pass for a title shot." They aren't unifying anything because the interim belt is bullshit. |

Othello - Unify the belts?? I like Condit but that is such a stupid statement on his part. you do realise that when a fighter holding a interim belt fights the champion holding the main belt then it is known as a unifying bout due to the fact they are unifying the two belts? Now I'm not calling you stupid but I am implying it. I am also a bit bemused that some people are critising Condit for wanting to fight Kampman if GSP cannot return by November. Condit has already been sitting on the sideline for 4 months now that means in total he will potentially be out for close to a year without fighting. Rematching with Nick is pretty pointless as he has already beaten him so he has little to gain. Not to mention Nick is out on suspension. On the otherhand Kampman is on a roll, has done much more in the UFC than Nick and is the only fighter to have defeated Condit in the past 6 years. That makes actually makes a match with Condit far more worthwhile in the event that the GSP fight cannot be held this year. |

I like how Condit is pretending Hendricks doesn't exist.

officedrone23 - I like how Condit is pretending Hendricks doesn't exist. <img src="/images/phone/apple.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/> Hendricks probably deserves the next shot over kampmann...however condit has lost to kampmann before so I think it's okay for him to have a preference. |

officedrone23 - I like how Condit is pretending Hendricks doesn't exist. Right. And if he said he wanted to fight Hendricks, he'd be ducking Kampmann. |

So everyone seems to agree he should fight someone wether it be kampmann or Johnny.. What are the same demands made for Nate Diaz to fight Pettis?

officedrone23 - I like how Condit is pretending Hendricks doesn't exist.First thing I thought. But despite his performance with Nick, Diaz is a fighter and has a high finishing rate and is diversed well in his skills. I dont think he would duck Hendricks if the fight was proposed to him over Martin.

Condit ducking Hendricks is ridiculous , he just never forgot about the lost to kampman. If he lost to Hendricks before he would want to avenge that loss as well. |

For whatever reason, the fight I want to see most is GSP vs nick Diaz. That's all.

So now that Diaz is suspended for a year,he all of a sudden wants to defend that belt....lol. I used to be a big Condit fan,but he hasn't exactly shown that warrior spirit since "winning" that belt. |

LilBrockonmychest -This is the gold standard amongst quotes about Anderson. I will be using it in other threads. |

Condit will get hated on no matter who he prefers to fight. This is why GSP always says the cliche, "I'll fight anybody the UFC wants me to." |

Zuffa needs a main event for Toronto... Condit vs Kampmann would do the trick. GSP could fight hendricks in Montreal and then the winners could unify the belts in 2013 toronto stadium. |

I'm at a loss for words. For the last month, every thread about Condit was "he should be willing to defend his belt and stop waiting for GSP". Now Condit has said he would do exactly that and... and... The amount of faggotry here is mind bottling. |
