It's a 2008 National Style O that I found on eBay. I'm anxiously awaiting delivery.    
From the National site: Our reproduction Style O-14 Fret meets the demands of players needing easier access to the higher frets. Based on the original 1937 model, the hard rock maple neck clears 14 frets to the body. The brass body is made of thin gauge material polished to a mirror-like shine, nickel plated and etched with the traditional Hawaiian scene. The "chicken-foot" coverplate, formed back, and inlaid rosewood peghead complete the authentic look of this guitar. |

It might kill communsits, too (just don't tell Woody). What sucks is that I leave for a 5-day business trip on Saturday. The guitar is supposd to arrive Friday afternoon. |

Ali - Originally it was meant to kill fascists, but it was taken out of production in the 50's when people began using it to bludgeon the homeless. A sad, tragic story. |

Got it. The guitar was waiting for me when I came home from work. I took it out of the shipping case and it looked great, in mint condition. Right away I tuned to Open D and tried some slide, but it had terrible sustain. Uh oh! I unscrewed the top and checked the cone. There was a small dent that popped right out. The cone looked like new once I did that, so I put things back together. But things still weren't right. The tone and sustain were weak. It felt almost felt too easy to fret, and the action felt awfully low. I started wondering how much $$ I would have to burn to raise the action. Then it struck me - the old owner had light strings on it. You don't play slide with those light strings - especially on a metal-body resonator! So, I immediately changed to medium strings with a .014 on the high E. It made a big difference. Ive been happily playing all morning. :) |

Congratulations, whaledog! It really is a beautiful looking thing. You must have had a bit of panic before you got the issues worked out... glad you got it early enough to do that! |

they KEY to a good sounding reso is in the setup - getting correct tension on the cone, and theres a few wood blocks that can be moved unfortunately there's only 2 or 3 guys in the world who do it right as John dopyera intended. David flood, john dopyera's apprentice - almost impossible to get him to work on anything for25+ years...although he is making a few new reso's of his own design (spoke to him a month ago) worked a the original shop in the 70's John quaterman - hung around the shop with john..different people talk of different accounts of his involvement/apprentice level. he did work at the original shop in the 70's bob brosmen CLAIMS to set them up right....i dont know if fact BTW last time i spoke to quatermen (15 years) - he was hand spinning cones, just in case you need a replacement |

sreiter - check out Thanks Steve, Coincidentally, I just ordered the John Pearse '3000 "G" Tuning' set yesterday, along with some unwound 0.026 strings for the 3rd string. I wrote to National Resophonic and they said that the neck should handle it fine, as long as I stay in Open G and Open D tuning. As for the setup, I was just planning to continue "as is." |

whaledog -Hillbilly - Goddamn that`s nice! Congrats!! Been pretty busy gigging. The last few weeks have been a rough patch including a 7 day hospital stay, but I`m hanging in there.. I got an old Polytone Mini Brute that I`m having a ball with.. es-175 + a Polytone = the jazz tone of the gods..lol |
