Pancrase - 2000 Anniversary Show was a mixed martial arts event that took place at the Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan on September 24, 2000. The event featured two, 4-man tournaments plus a King of Pancrase openweight title fight. All bouts fought under the organizations newer Pankration style rules (gloves - all head strikes = legal - no rope escape) The tournament winners would be crowned first ever middleweight and light heavyweight King of Pancrase! Pancrase - 2000 Anniversary Show Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan September 24, 2000 4 Man Mw Tournament (170-185lb) Nathan Marquardt vs Kiuma Kunioku Chris Lytle vs Shonie Carter 4 Man LHw Tournament (186-205lb) Omar Bouiche vs Keiichiro Yamamiya Ikuhisa Minowa vs Brian Gassaway Denis Kang vs Minoru Suzuki Joe Charles vs Kengo Watanabe Semmy Schilt vs Osami Shibuya (Openweight Title) *Video taken from the Japanese television show, The Pancrase Hybrid Hour. IIRC this is also the show that Masakatsu Funaki retired at. That ceremony was really emotional. Seeing Suzuki crying in the middle of the ring with Funaki was pretty powerful. |

I have this on a VHS tape packed away somewhere. I've got the Pancrase 5th Anniversary Show from 1998 where Bas Rutten challenges Rickson Gracie to a fight after he wins his match (I think Bas' opponent was Kengo Wantanabe, but it could have been somebody else). Rickson was in the audience earlier in the show but he left before Bas' fight. I've always wondered if Rickson knew that Bas was going to challenge him and that's why he took off. |
