Newton introduced the mechanical age which changed society and technology fundamentally. Maxwell introduced the electrical/magnetic age which is now in full swing. In time Einstein's concepts will filter down to the same degree, but I don't feel we have transitioned from Maxwell's to Einstein's age. |

The man who made fire is the correct answer. Set us apart from the rest of the animals on this earth and we haven't looked back since. |

"humans have 0 adaptations that suit them for physical combat, and even with a weapon a human is at a significant disadvantage against most wild predators." WOW how about the ability to think and reason and make weapons, grow food, build shelter...adapt the enviornment to you not the other way around. Yeah that argument makes sense since we all run around in fear of wild predators. "who ever made the soap hygiene disease connection." That was God, you can read about it in Leviticus long before "modern man figured it out on his own" Fire, sure but that was also God'd doing as was metalurgy, woodworking, farming, husbandry and pretty much every other skill we know today |

Who is God? Shockley, Bardeen, and Brattain - The transistor. It enabled the global connectivity of the internet. That's bigger than Gutenberg by a mile. There's no time in recorded history where humans have advanced as quickly as the last century. And the next century will be even more rapid. Or maybe Tesla (AC/electric motors) or Maxwell (Electromagnetics)... People have leisure time to do all the other things that advanced humanity because of the discoveries those men made in harnessing energy. Without those guys, we'd all be working in a mine, a factory, or on a farm. They found a way to divide labor by 0. |

Its gotta be either the guy that moved us from hunter/gathers to farmers, or Gutenberg with the printing press. |

No one discovered fire or agriculture any more than they discovered the sun or water. Or thumbs. It happened in many places, and in many ways. I suppose one tribe did it 'first', but another tribe did it a week later, a thousand miles away. I think language is what sets us apart from chimps, so anything before recorded history is part of our evolution. |

Up until recently it had to be Gutenberg, but now with the ability to speak to virtually every person on the planet(and soon to be instant translators); the Internet has to be the new correct answer. The Internet is in the infant stage. We will never comprehend how much it will change the world and create one univeral language exponentially changing sciences, technology, goals, et cetera.

banjo - 1. Isaac Newton Einstein and Edison were hacks who stuck their name on others' ideas. Especially Edison. Anyone who mentions Edison should bow in gratitude to whatever turd-juggling god you worship and be thankful that I'm not a moderator, for I would ban you from your own conception for mentioning that slime-monkey in any conversation of 'greatness' that wasn't centered around Greatest Disgrace to Humanity. Really Really Fuck Edison. |

Newton was a philosopher of the Enlightenment. But no single philosopher has done more to advance humanity than Diderot...he encapsulated the philosophies and spread the seeds of The Age of Reason. He was directly responsible for the advancement of humanity from religious autocracies to representative government by spreading the ideas of individual freedom, self-determination, and natural rights. On the other hand, Marx's philosophies have been used by autocracies to enslave and kill hundreds of millions of people. Although I think it's difficult to define a 'Marxist philosophy', his concepts were an important counter-reaction to the attempts of The Establishment to re-wrap exploitation of the lower classes in the language of 'individualism' - and for that we can thank him. |

The man who destroys technological "civilization" will get my vote. But with how you are intending the question I have to agree with an earlier poster who voted Tesla. |

Domestication of the wolf, or wolfization of the human, however you look at it. Human race would currently be unrecognizable without this happenstance. |
